On June 20, 1945, Morna Anne Murray was born in the Canadian coal-mining town of Springhill, Nova Scotia, to Dr. James Carson Murray, the town's physician, and Marion Margaret Murray, a nurse. After expressing an interest in music at an early age, her parents enrolled her in piano lessons. By the time she was fifteen, Anne was studying voice.
