About the Author

Jill Barklem was drawn to the natural world ever since childhood. While training as an illustrator at St Martin’s School of Art, her long journeys to college gave her time to escape into the imaginary world of a colony of mice, later to be developed as the delightful miniature world of Brambly Hedge. Jill passed away in 2017 but her legacy lives on in these enchanting tales.

There is a wonderful community of mice that live in a hedgerow called Brambly Hedge. Here life is peaceful and busy. They spend the spring and summer months collecting nuts, berries, and various fruits and flora for deliciously homemade jams and baked goods. Everything is kept in the Store Stump, an enormous tree stump that has many rooms for everything a mouse might need.A love of cooking goes hand in hand with the many fun feasts, picnics, and festivals that go on in Brambly Hedge. From birthday picnics to Naming Ceremonies to weddings, the mice of Brambly Hedge eagerly await any opportunity to celebrate.I read this series back when I was growing up and what I love the most about the stories are the intricate illustrations in each story. The beautifully rendered cross-sections of the houses where the mice live are the perfect place to live. I want to live there!I consider this collection of stories to be classics that every child should read. However, from what I have found out, they are currently out of print. Even though they may be hard to find, try your local library. All AgesPublisher: Atheneum Books for Young Readers

Charming stories that will always bring back happy memories from childhood, particularly getting a brambly hedge notebook for Christmas along with a new satchel and pens and paper for my first year at school.

The best. What a completely charming book. Both of my children (ages 8 and 4) loved it. The illustrations draw you into these charming stories.

My mother bought these books for me when I was younger and my nieces LOVE having them read to them whenever they are over. These books are wonderfully written and the illustrations are just as lovely to look at. I have long awaited this books release into the U.S. (waited 2 years!) My nieces birthdays are very close together and I bought them this book to share. I especially like that this book is actually bigger than the originals and that the words are larger and easier to help them read along. Again, wonderful stories that invoke a spark of imagination and wonder if there really ARE little mice living in the forest with secret staircases and picnics alike! You will not regret this buy!!!
