The Deadline by Lorhainne Eckhart

~"Author Lorhainne Eckhart is adept at showing deeply felt emotions through actions, instead of just telling us. The insecurity, fear and paranoia practically emanated from Laura at the beginning of the story and watching her find her strength was truly an honor." ~ Reviewed by Natasha Jackson, Readers Favorite

~"A beautiful tale of emotional struggle and the battle to protect a family." J. Jackson

~"I don't know how I missed this author as much as I read, but I am glad I stumbled upon her. This story in particular touched me because of Andy's love for Gabriel, and the lengths he went to protect his family." A. Mullins

Reviewed by Natasha Jackson for Readers' Favorite Andy Friessen, his wife Laura, and their children have packed up and moved to Montana to escape his blue-blooded mother. In The Deadline, Andy and Laura learn that their five-year-old, Gabriel, is sick and needs a bone marrow transplant, which opens up a can of worms and old hurts from Laura’s past. Laura must confront the parents who tossed her out when she became pregnant as a teenager, as well as the biological father who turned her away just as easily, in order to save the son she fought so hard to keep. Author Lorhainne Eckhart is adept at showing deeply felt emotions through actions, instead of just telling us. The insecurity, fear and paranoia practically emanated from Laura at the beginning of the story and watching her find her strength was truly an honor. So much happened in The Deadline, yet it did not feel like an overwrought melodrama. Andy and Laura are two people unused to asking others for help, but when one of their kids falls ill, they quickly learn that’s what family does. Lorhainne Eckhart should be commended for her ability to create characters that are real instead of caricatures. Laura’s parents were reprehensible; Sue was too cold and inflexible and George was just an ornament, doing as his wife requested. It is a wonder that Laura and her brothers, Brian and Chad, grew into loving, decent people with them as role models. The characters in this story were multi-faceted and I’m hoping there will be an entire book dedicated to neighbor Kim and the good doctor, Bruce. The Deadline is an amazing tale of parental love, familial devotion and the strength required to keep it all together when a child’s life is on the line. As timid as Laura began in this story, she proved she was strong-willed when it really mattered and we’d all be lucky to have a little bit of Laura in us.

Loved it

Laura's character graded on my nerves. Very immature, whiny and insecure for majority of book. And so ungrateful and rude to Kim.

150+ pages and then 30 pages if other stuff. Story itself was good but was expecting more to the story since i had so many pages left. Wrong!

Much better than the prequel,The Awakening. I only got this book because it was free as I was disappointed by the author in the past. This book is short, 150 pages and deals with the critcal illness of a child and mending of past famy issues while trying to make a new marriage work. It helped to know the backstory as so much is packed into this story. I enjoyed the book. It was a complete story but I know there will be more to learn in the next book. The resolution was a bit abrupt but overall a good book.

When I first started to write this review I thought I had only one word that could describe this book, but then I realized that won't work, one word could not describe the strength, love, perseverance and the passion that is this book. In the first book Laura was my favorite character out of the two main characters in this book Andy is; his perseverance and his strength and his whole I'm going do whatever I have to do to protect my family attitude was just amazing. I highly highly highly recommend this book especially if you read the first book in the fall in love with it like I did. You have to read this one it is the icing on the cake and it just tops everything off.

It's said crocodiles eat their young, but Andy Friessen's mother makes a crocodile look like mother of the year! His wife, Laura, her mother is no role model for motherhood either. The author is so great at developing characters and making them real, that at times while reading this book, I found myself cursing outloud at some characters, and almost crying and wanting to hug others. Andy and Laura Friessen have moved two states away from home, with their three children, to get away from his mother who will stop at nothing to manipulate him and destroy his wife. Some troubles, though, you can't run from; their oldest child, 5 year old Gabriel, is diagnosed with a life threatning illness that requires a transplant. This happens a few days after moving to their new home. What happens after that, makes for an emotional exploration of what family and unconditional love is all about. I will read this one, again and again and again!

I just finished The Deadline, the first in The Friessens: A New Beginning series, and loved it enough that I couldn't wait to share it. Thie emotional struggle was nothing like I expected.  I have wanted to read the Friessen books for a while but could never find time until I won this on during a release party.  The series and now moved to the top end of my TBR lists.  While I found Andy a little overpowering, it fit his alpha personality perfectly.  I loved watching Laura's growth and can't wait to see more of this couple. When they moved to Montana to leave behind the band memories his mother had caused, they never expected to get into a fight for their sons life.  A literal fight to defeat leukemia. The search for a bone marrow donor takes them back to the town where her parents kicked her out of the house for becoming pregnant at 15 and her "boyfriend" rejected her twice.  Once she surrendered to him and again when she told him she was pregnant with his child and one her own.   As if worry for Gabriel and caring for their new born twins was not enough, the "father" of her child decides he wants to be a part of the little boys life.  How much can a couple handle before the even have a chance to get their new house set up.
