Overview

Collins' output includes 25 novels, more than 30 short stories and novelettes, over a dozen plays and sporadic bits of journalism. As was the practice with Victorian novelists, Collins wrote his fair share of ghost stories. THE HAUNTED HOTEL, however, was the first novel in which the supernatural is of central interest.

Wilkie Collins also penned one of the first in the genre of the detective novel, THE MOONSTONE.

About the Author

Wilkie Collins (1824-1889) is considered the inventor of the modern English detective novel with his book The Moonstone (1868). A contemporary and friend of Charles Dickens, who serialized many of Collins' works in magazines he edited, Collins is also remembered for his classic mystery The Woman in White.
