This book tells the story of four generations of a Princeton family from the Civil War to World War II. The founder of this dynasty is an incredibly greedy robber baron who makes his fortune selling war materials. His clueless son Jeremiah, and his intelligent, genteel granddaughter Margaret, make use of the money he has gathered together, but they are haunted by its bad effects. And his great-grandson, who has been cruelly separated from his family, tries to piece together the puzzle left by his great-grandfather before going off to fight in the Second World War.
