A lord in danger. A magician in turmoil. A snowball in hell.

Exiled to China for twenty years, Lucien Vaudrey never planned to return to England. But with the mysterious deaths of his father and brother, it seems the new Lord Crane has inherited an earldom. He's also inherited his family's enemies. He needs magical assistance, fast. He doesn't expect it to turn up angry.

Magician Stephen Day has good reason to hate Crane's family. Unfortunately, it's his job to deal with supernatural threats. Besides, the earl is unlike any aristocrat he's ever met, with the tattoos, the attitude... and the way Crane seems determined to get him into bed. That's definitely unusual.

Soon Stephen is falling hard for the worst possible man, at the worst possible time. But Crane's dangerous appeal isn't the only thing rendering Stephen powerless. Evil pervades the house, a web of plots is closing round Crane, and if Stephen can't find a way through it—they're both going to die.

Well. Love. Magic. Sex. What's not to like? I am going to go out and look for any sequels in this world. I liked the word building. That is always something I enjoy in fantasy books. It is completely different from our world in every way, or is it laced with ours, with just slight changes/differences. This Book is the latter. In this tale the two protagonists live in a world just like ours...but in an alternative history/universe where magic and an entire magical society with its own government and rules exist. A lot of time was not spent introducing us to every details of the world in some long boring narrative, but introduced slowly and as relevant to the happening in the book. I thought it was handled very well. I loved Lucien. He has the perfect dry humor and sarcasm I love, but not in a negative way. It makes him charming and works well in drawing even his most angry opponent to him, as it did Stephen. He is a character that is brave in living his life how he deems fit regardless of the consequences. Stephen, I loved almost because he is brave in another way. He does what is necessary even if it makes him want to run away screaming. That's takes strength. These two meeting is a recipe for drama and we find out lots of magic and ...FINALLY after waiting the whole book....some pretty hot sexy times. That was quite worth the wait. I always say I love the slow build, it makes the final pay off so much more satisfying. As this romance is just beginning...I look forward to more, much more from them. heh. The mystery was handled well and built slowly, piece by piece falling into place. While the romance was was still secondary to the magic and the mystery. The actual plot was quite good and keeps you guessing...until the final reveal and it mostly made sense. There was a place or two where I was confused with all the threads, but it came together satisfactorily in the end. The end also left open a possibility of more to come in the adventures of Crane and Stephen...and their enemy. Look forward to it.

In this historical paranormal tale, someone or something is trying to kill Lord Lucien Crane, and Stephen Day, a man with every reason to hate Crane for the way his family was treated by Crane's father reluctantly agrees to help find the cause of the supernatural disturbance that is threatening Crane's life. Will he succeed or will all his powers be for naught? What a fascinating story! It's like a mix of a Sherlock Holmes mystery and Harry Potter fantasy, with an unlikely pair of men who share an attraction to each other that surprises them both. Lucien is every bit a lord in his dress and mannerisms - with the exception being his penchant for men over women, though it's not portrayed effusively in the story by any means. Stephen on the other hand seems to be a drab dull man at the start - yet we soon learn that it's a front he presents of himself so that he can remain unobtrusively in the background, observing and gathering facts. Lucien soon realizes the power that Stephen wields though, and is simultaneously awed by it and attracted to the man underneath. The plot unfolds at a rapid pace and from the first page, the reader is brought into this incredible Victorian world where magic seems part of the day to day normality for the select few aware of it. There is a lot of suspense, action, drama and a bit of male male "bonding" that occurs, keeping the reader on their toes. I loved every bit of it! I'm very much looking forward to continuing their story in the next book of the series. 5 stars!

What an introduction to an amazing universe!!! It wasnt so complicated that it needed a ton of backstory that slowed it down. Instead we got a fresh story that seemed to reveal itself naturally. I didnt want the book to end and I cant wait to read more stories with Lucien and Stephen. It was a little light on the man love, but who has time for sex when you are saivng the world? The dialogue is sharp and witty and the action is fast paced. This story involving a mysterious curse plaguing the Vaudreys and the small magical man who is charged with fighting evil will enchant paranormal romance readers. Charles is now on my TBR list :-)

This was a quick read and I loved every moment. I’ve already down loaded the second and I can only hope they eventually fall in love and admit it to one another.

It's so many genres in one. You have fantasy, comedy, love.... What more can one ask for?

This book was a fantastic romp. The characters are quite engaging, and the magic is fascinating. As the suspense ramps up, my heart started pounding! The creepiness is described so well, and of course, so is the sexual tension. The first couple chapters could do with a slightly heavier hand in editing, but once the story gets going, the flow is excellent, and I will definitely be keeping this one to read again, as well as looking for sequels. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a fantastoc, magical, suspenseful novel that happens to feature two hot men who can't, and shouldn't, keep their hands off each other.

I'm shelving this one with my other favorites. Both lead characters are utterly engaging. The action just keeps coming and there is such a great feeling of genuine emotion. I'm in love!!!!

KJ Charles stories are a feast of, fantasy, action, love, lust and sex. I devoured every book of her's that I could find. I can surely say that I pine for more of her stories, finding myself distraught when I finished reading them all.
