The Majolica Murders - a Jeff Talbot Mystery by Deborah Morgan

Ex-FBI agent and antiques picker Jeff Talbot asks Lanny, a fellow picker, to scout out some antique majolica as a present for his wife — with no idea just how costly it will be. Lanny is a bit of a loner, but Jeff has always liked him. So it comes as a total shock when the young man is arrested for murdering an antiques dealer.

Jeff learns that Lanny quarreled with the dealer after she sold two pieces of majolica she was supposed to hold for him — uncharacteristic of the kind, caring, and trustworthy man that Jeff knows. As Jeff investigates Lanny's claims of innocence, he learns the majolica has a long history — one that somebody is determined to keep quiet.

As I have read this series, I have learned a lot about a lot. But this book gives us more of the story of Jeff et.al in a bit of a windup to the series. Jeff turns forty. Its been 2 years since Sheila's kidnapping and she's made great strides at recovering her sense of self. IMHO she's turned outward as Jeff is turning inward. His friend and fellow picker, John " Lanny" Smith, are on the hunt for a killer of another dealer and find the tie-in is majolica, a form of layered glazed decorative art. Lanny, who used to be Jeff's informant( and the one who saved Sheila) also has a mystery of his own past to deal with. This series has been very informative without being too snobbish. However, this "finale" does come across a bit forced, hence the 4* instead of 5*.
