THE MASTER MIND OF MARS is the sixth in Edgar Rice Burroughs' BARSOOM series. The story follows Ulysses Paxton, an Englishman transported to the red planet by astral projection. This comes at a terrible price, the death of the young victims of the Master Mind.

About the Author

Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950) was a prolific American author, best known for his characters Tarzan and John Carter of Mars, although he wrote in a number of genres including westerns and non-fiction. A native of Chicago, Burroughs served briefly in the southwest in the U.S. Cavalry, but was discharged due to a heart condition. He worked at several odd jobs before writing fiction in 1911. The success of TARZAN a few years later cemented Burroughs' reputation as a pulp writer. He completed more than seventy books during his career.

I read all ten when a teenager (there is an 11th by a different author) and thought I would recapture the escape from reality. You should read the 1st book, "Princess of Mars" so the others will make sense. I would read them in order but if that is too much escapism for you I recommend this one (the 6th) and the 7th, "A Fighting Man of Mars." The series is all about being noble when all those around you are up to no good and your civilization is collapsing - lots of similarity to what's happening in the US today. Leave the earth for awhile and have some adventures.

I read all of Burrougs Mars and Venus books and found each one extremely enjoyable. Burroghs maintains a emaginative world that you can emerse yourself in as if you were on Mars yourself. We all know, these days that Mars is not like what Burroghs discribed for us but his books are still good. I just returned from watching the latest 3D movie" John Carter of Mars" movie. It brought back all those stories and it was as if I was really back there with John Carter fighting the bad guys again. The development of digital movies has opened up a whole new genre for screen writers to develope more fantasy movies. I am looking forward to more like Avatar and John Carter of Mars.
