I loved the Matchmaking Game. Another hit from Donna and a perfect novella. I’m picky about novellas…do they draw you in quickly, develop the characters well and have a complete story line? This one fit the bill. Your heart was immediately engaged in Rowena and Evan’s entangled lives. The growth of their romance was ideal and sweet. Such a delightful story to warm your heart with instant satisfaction.
England - 1814 Rowena Emerson, age 23, is concerned about her friend, Evan Barnes, age 25, who has returned from the war an unhappy man. She is looking for ways to make him laugh like they did at the pranks they pulled when they were young. Evan’s father passed away 2 years ago as did Rowena’s mother. But, now it looks like their widowed parents have taken an interest in one other. Rowena wants Evan’s help in playing matchmaker for their parents, but Evan tends to be cool to the idea. While Rowena is attracted to Evan, he feels he must keep a promise he made to his friend, Joseph Pritchard, before he died in the war. Thus, Evan is to meet the man’s sister, Cynthia, a wealthy young woman. He had promised Joseph he would marry the girl. But Evan has even more problems than the fact that his family’s money was stolen by the estate manager. His sister, Winifred, has heart problems and he needs money to take her to a special doctor in Scotland. This is a well-written, clean novel that I enjoyed very much. I look forward to reading more by this author. I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review.
This is a fabulous historical romance. It's well written, well plotted, and hosts characters which are easy to fall in love with. Reading this novel was my first experience with Donna Hatch, but it won't be my last. I look forward to following her career.
