Socialism started with good intentions and ended with coercive statism. This idea was defended as early as 1892 by Joseph Hiam Levy, a British economist and logician. What followed (communist countries, the drift of mild socialism to more and more authoritarianism, etc.) certainly vindicated him. The only role of government, Levy argued, is to make sure “that freedom may be at the maximum.” This book argues that individualism, not socialism, is our only hope.
