Entries include descriptions of essential oils from plants used in perfumery from ancient times to the present day, showing botanical identity, where they come from, how they are used, their history and folklore, and examples of perfumes in which they are constituents, with similar descriptions of animal ingredients, and the principal chemical and synthetic materials now employed.
