A mysterious portal, which opens at dawn and closes again at dusk, is located deep in the woods and kept secret from the vast majority of the people who inhabit the kingdom of Rastella. Only a few are aware of its existence and fewer understand the confusing prophecy that accompanies it.
Now, Ajax Maxwell, who is approaching his 14th birthday and has been in training for the past 2 years, is preparing to fulfill his family's legacy by becoming the next keeper.
But Ajax is afraid. He's worried that he won't live up to the expectations placed upon him and will let down his family, like his brother Axel did when he took over from their father and then promptly disappeared.
When the prince of Rastella comes to visit for the first time, accompanied by Ajax's childhood friend Nivara, it doesn't take long for things to go wrong. In an accident, the prince falls into the portal and Ajax knows that it's up to him to go and get him back.
With the knowledge that nobody who has entered it has ever returned, Ajax and Nivara go through the portal to try to save the prince. But what Ajax finds inside, and what he discovers about the prophecy, will test him to his limits.

Reviewed by Andrew McFarland (Teen Reviewer) for Readers' Favorite Deep in the forest, hidden within a tree trunk, is a portal. Few know about the portal and no one knows where it leads. In The Portal Keeper: The Keeper Chronicles by S.T. Sanchez, the Maxwell family has guarded the portal in the tree trunk carefully and proudly. However, when Axel Maxwell abandons his duty, shame is brought upon the Maxwell family. Ajax, Axel’s younger brother, takes up the position of portal keeper, hoping to prove the king wrong about his thoughts of the Maxwell family. When Ajax finds a medallion with magical powers, his world is forever changed. He is soon transported to the other side of the portal where animals speak and elves rule the world harshly. Ajax is quickly sucked into a quest to return home. The Portal Keeper: The Keeper Chronicles by S.T. Sanchez is filled with cleverly created creatures that really help you to imagine the world. The story is told from three characters’ perspectives so at times it can be confusing. The characters are all unique and cool in their own way. The three characters are Ajax, Crown Prince Blake, and his betrothed, Nivara. The settings that the story takes place in are both creative and intriguing. Just to let you know, this is the first book in the series so expect some things not to be completely wrapped up. I would give this book a smiley face for effort. With clever wording and creative ideas, it is a good read. There will be more books by S.T. Sanchez to look forward to.
