JILL MILLER is the co-founder of Tune Up Fitness Worldwide (www.tuneupfitness.com) and the creator of the corrective exercise format Yoga Tune Up® and the Roll Model® Method. With more than 28 years of study in anatomy and movement, she is a pioneer in forging relevant links between the worlds of fitness, yoga, massage, and pain management. Learning Jill Miller's work has given me a new relationship with my body! Using the techniques on a daily basis she has so beautifully and thoughtfully put in print and changed the way I teach, move and feel. This book is for EVERYONE regardless of age or gender (my teenage sons use the therapy balls to recover from their physical activities) who wants to feel better and breathe better.   More than a text book, The Roll Model is an inspirational text that aims at teaching people that they have the power to feel better working from the inside out!

I discovered Jill Miller's work after sustaining a martial arts related hip injury that would not go away. I suffered from chronic, debilitating pain for more than a year and nothing I tried (Eastern, Western medicine) helped. I took ONE of Jill's "Friday Classes" that focused exclusively on hips and the pain that had been plaguing me for more than a year, was almost completely gone. She has been my teacher ever since. About ten years later, I got back into martial arts... at the tender age of 45. The lessons I learned informed my body care regime. This book and the remarkable, body state-change tools in it accompany me every where I go. I use the balls for pre-hab and re-hab EVERY TIME I train. I use them in the car, on the plane and I'm standing on balls as I write this at my standing desk. Jill's work and particularly The Roll Model have liberated me to do anything I want physically, despite my age. I'm spoiled, I wake up pain  free every morning. When I go to my martial arts school and see twenty-somethings grimacing when they stretch because their backs are killing them, I lean over with my well-worn toted Plus and say, "I can help you with your back pain... you're gonna need some balls." A million thanks to Jill Miller for pioneering this important and effective work. I know there's a lot of science behind the work, but it FEELS miraculous!

Jill Miller is my teacher, my mentor and my friend. Disclaimer: my review is totally biased.  Notwithstanding, I will tell you that The Roll Model is a great book. Jill is extremely intelligent and humorous and speaks to the reader’s heart and mind.   What is all this “rolling” about? You have probably seen people rolling on large foam tubes and been told that if you do that after a workout you won’t be as sore the next day.  Maybe someone told you it’s a good way to relax tight muscles.  It turns out there is a lot of science to “rolling” or “self-myofascial massage”.  Rolling can relieve lots of pain and its symptoms by massaging yourself (more accurately, your fascia). You can improve your breathing, your posture, your health, your fitness, your sleep, and even your emotional state.  Jill explains it all in The Roll Model. Also you can do a lot better job of rolling with a pair of Roll Model Balls than a big foam tube. If you buy the book, you should also get yourself a pair of balls and try the many, many techniques that are put forth in the book (with beautiful colorful pictures and easy-to-follow instructions).   The book is filled with testimonials of real people that have had miraculous results from The Roll Model techniques that Jill and her teachers have taught over the years.  Is this book for you? Do you have a desire to live better in your body? Do want to move without pain? Then this book is for you.  Are you an active person? Do you move a lot? Are you a movement professional or teacher? Do you dance, do yoga, do Pilates, lift, run, bike, swim, crossfit?  Are you a therapist: physical, occupational, massage or otherwise? Then this book will be a necessity as you learn to navigate your body and your injuries and your blind spots and your pain and your recovery as well as your clients.  Do I recommend you buy The Roll Model?  Yes and no. Obviously I want everyone to benefit from Jill’s work and I know this book will help so many people live better in their bodies.  However, I have to be selfish and say that I want to keep all the secrets to myself.  This stuff works like voodoo when I do it and show it to my clients.  So please only buy this book if you don’t live in New York or can’t afford my rates.  No, seriously, buy the damn book!

After seeing a short video with Jill Miller saying you could use a tennis ball, I thought this may be the book for me to get started on a new plan. However, when I received the book the balls used are specific and sold for $50.

This book is a must have....you will learn how to erase pain improve your breathing and quality of life in a simple and easy way...few minutes a day of rolling will dramatically improve your mobility.....I highly recommend!!! Nadjiba

Review of Jill Miller's The Roll Model, (432pp, Victory Belt Publishing, Inc., 2014) Jill Miller's brand new book, The Roll Model, can only be read as an experience of heart and mind and body all rolled into one. The book is as stunningly beautiful in the way of books as it's author is in the way of people and the work she has created. The Roll Model is literally a feast for the eyes. The book is so chock full of starkly clear instructional pictures that even if you skipped the words, you could read it like an image gallery and readily access the straightforward presentation of self health care as it can be at its best:  simple, cheap, effective, real.  That having been said, for heaven's sake, don't skip the words! Jill has written an eminently readable book, with serious "thud" value to boot. The text is full of warm and compelling prose, stories of personal empowerment that literally brought me to tears. Why? Because tales of the human spirit stepping into its own cannot help but expand and bless your heart. These are not merely "success stories." These are stories of what we might call "the everyday miraculous." Everyday, because we humans are ordinary folks, often meeting extraordinary challenges and suffering with great courage. Miraculous, because they testify to the power of healing given us by our own hands, wielding the most basic of tools --a few balls-- but with an intelligence well past basic. The great gifts of our bodies, once explored, are seen here to transform into the vehicles for the fulfilling lives they are designed to support, however much suffering we may have endured previous to this self-caring, self-reclaiming exploration. For the mind, The Roll Model is a systematic presentation. Jill actually makes sense for you of her method, without overwhelming or boring you with too much intellectual material unsupported by demonstration or engagement of the rest of you. She makes her case intelligently, by enlisting the reader as a whole in the exploration she is explaining. Anatomical and physiological concepts are supported with visual and tactile experiences and story that are the hallmarks of good teaching. And for the body? If Ms. Miller's book is for anything, it is for your body! I couldn't read more than a few pages before I had to put it down and play with my balls. I mean it. (I say this in the spirit of the book which, by the way, is not shy to have some fun with the endless puns and ironies inherent in the teaching of a woman who's got balls: serious balls.) The therapy balls are truly useful, effective tools that you can explore yourself with as deeply as you are willing to go. Step by step instruction and advice keep you on a safe, self-healing, self-care track. It feels good to read this book, because you will feel compelled to do for yourself what no one else truly can do for you: "Pick up your mat and walk!" The invitation is to connect yourself up from the inside, to move, to touch, to wake up all that is dormant, stuck, frozen, and in pain within you, and let it roll on out.  The Roll Model deserves your attention. Reading here and following along, applying the techniques, is a service to yourself. I am rarely effusive in my praise, but Jill Miller has earned it.
