After protesting abuses at the Montana Indian Boarding School, Essie is dismissed from her teaching job. But before she can depart, she's kidnapped by Cade Newcastle--the half-breed uncle of her missing student.
Shot during the escape and now dogged by a hanging posse, Cade's desperate search becomes a race against time, and Essie--instead of abandoning him--saves his life.
Trading favor for favor, Cade and Essie continue searching for Cade's nephew. The lines between captor and captive turn into mutual respect, then flare into passion. But the hanging posse will never allow a half-breed to be the ruination of Essie Sparks.

Unforgettable Characters! I received a copy of this book from eBook Discovery in exchange for my honest review. This is the second book I've read by Ms. Ankrum and I was not disappointed. Ms. Ankrum's main characters Essie and Cade, have both withstood emotional family losses and as a result they are wary of trusting each other. The conditions that the Cheyenne children suffer at the school, from which Essie is kidnapped and Cade's cousin Little Wolfe escapes, are described in heart breaking detail. My tears also fell when reading the plight of the young girl that Little Wolfe befriended after he was captured and sold to the owner of an opium den and brothel using enslaved Chinese girls. I would have given the story 5 stars, if any lightness was provided to offset some of the heart wrenching moments of this enthralling story.
