Overview

The Secret Thief by Nina Lane

My life is no fairy tale, but it's grim.

A twisted affair ruined my career and reputation. The loss of my beloved uncle wrecked my heart. All I have left is an old house in a coastal Maine town crawling with secrets.

Then a mysterious, reclusive man offers me a job...as long as I don't ask him any questions or go poking my nose where it doesn't belong.

Strange? Yes. Tempting? Unbearably.

Though Flynn ignites me with hot desire, getting involved with the local eccentric is the worst thing I can do. Yet this man and his secrets are impossible to resist.

Who is he? Why is he such a loner? What's his story?

One day soon, I'm going to find out.

Tales of broken souls finding, healing and completing each other aren’t new in the romance genre, but there are fresh new ways to pairing characters who aren’t inclined to happy ever afters. In The Secret Thief, Nina Lane expertly explores the connection between recluse lighthouse keeper Flynn and history Eve. After a lack in judgment almost irreparably damages her career, reputation, and self-confidence Eve moves to Castille, Maine to try and put the pieces of her life and battered heart back together, but no amount of distance can hide her from the rumors attached to her and no one but the cantankerous and enigmatic Flynn is willing to help her. As Eve works on the private job Flynn assigned her, she finds herself wondering about the broody, mysterious man who doesn’t like questions and keeps himself locked up in the lighthouse’s tower. Flynn reveals close to nothing about himself, but his actions speak more than words and the crackling attraction between them starts to take a life of its own. And while their romance slowly ignites, undiscovered forces conspire against them. This is my first Nina Lane read, but it won’t be the last. Lane creates a story with depth and detail carefully interlacing a rich narrative that ranges from scenery and art description so vivid they leaps off the page, to interesting fairytale history, a suspenseful plot, smoking hot love scenes, and a swoony, slow burn connection that left me hungry for more. I wish I could reveal more about this amazing book but I believe it’s best when experienced firsthand. But if you’re looking for a reason to believe in the immense possibilities of love and kismet, Lane’s writing is an absolute must read. The Secret Theif is a wonderfully crafted and gripping standalone contemporary romance by author Nina Lane. Told mainly from the heroine’s point of view, with a happy ending.

I always anticipate a new Nina Lane book. I’ve been in love with her characters since the Professor and Beauty. But this book… The Secret Thief… is in a class of its own! Eve Perrin’s life is ruins. The untimely death of her favorite uncle, and the disastrous collapse of a promising career as an Art Historian at UCLA, has her seeking refuge as far away from California as she can possibly get. Her heart is broken. Her trust – mostly in herself – is decimated. The ramshackle house on the East Coast of Maine, the one willed to her by Uncle Max, is about all she has left. But what if Eve isn’t running away? What if this is where she was always meant to be? Flynn Alverson is Castille’s biggest mystery. In more ways than one. The reclusive lighthouse keeper is subject to much of the town’s gossip and speculation. He’s also the only one, at least it seems, who doesn’t know (or doesn’t care) about the disastrous events that brought Eve here. The woman with hair the color of flame may just turn out to be his happily ever after. I can’t aptly describe this book. I simply don’t have the words to do it justice. It’s everything I wanted, and nothing I expected. I was hoping for a fairy tale, but instead, I got a mystery. I was anticipating a mystery, but wound up reading a fairy tale. Nina Lane’s ability to tell a story is unlike any other author I’ve ever read. Her ability to knit words, and her attention to detail put the reader in every scene, even when that scene is a well-known (and loved) fairytale. There are few books I can say will forever change how I look at the world. The Secret Thief is one. Five tears still streaming down my face stars.

The Secret Thief is sensational. Nina Lane proves once again just how prolific a writer she continues to be, stepping into the world of romantic suspense like a veteran. The way she combines the most beautiful of love stories with an underlying mystery is beyond perfect. It wasn't hard to be swept away by the unlikely tale of the art historian and the lighthouse keeper. In fact much like the sea that surrounds the small town of Castille, Maine flows in and out, I was able to take a little piece of Eve and Flynn with me each time I finished a chapter, completely fulfilled by each and every word. This is a grand love story filled with salvation. One that is completely unexpected yet is wildly sexy and very tender. Eve Perrin's life is in shambles and the very last thing on her mind is starting yet another risky and failed relationship with the mysterious Flynn Alverton. But as consequences sprinkled with a bit of coincidence pave the way for these two to meet and become boss and employee, it's hard not to notice the sparks flying between them. Both dubious enough to question that chemistry, I found it charming to see each of them deny what might be happening between them, while pushing each other's buttons in the most subtle of ways. Eve, despite her recent failings, is no wallflower. I loved her tenacity and her drive to live her life the way she wanted to, ignoring her God awful Mother's warnings and the rumblings about her past transgressions through her newly-adopted town. She is brilliant and funny and fierce. She's not afraid to tackle a century-old toilet nor a sometimes scary stray dog. Thrown into a life she never saw coming, I couldn't help but root for her to find the strength to be the woman she lost along the way. And Flynn. Oh my. The brooding, sexy, man of few words. I couldn't blame Eve for wanting him to be the star of many a night's fantasy. Despite their simple and guarded meetings each morning, Flynn said more with his eyes to Eve than she ever thought possible. Like her beloved crossword puzzles, he was one riddle she was hellbent on solving. And I couldn't blame her one bit! There is so much to absorb in this book beyond the burgeoning love between Eve and Flynn. There are numerous secrets plus the less than savory characters who threaten Castille's charm and somehow Nina Lane weaves it all together seamlessly. Her love of fairy tales is a constant thread throughout this story and it's those kind of fine details that makes her books a step above the rest. I find myself learning something new with each book she writes and I'm forever grateful. I can't recommend The Secret Thief highly enough. It is superb from start to finish. As those last words are read, the warmth, the special feeling of love that only Nina Lane can deliver will simply make you smile. And honestly I can't think of anything better than that. This book is why I read. A huge 5++ stars!

5 stars--poetic and beautiful love story THE SECRET THIEF by Nina Lane is a contemporary, adult, stand alone romance focusing on art history professor Dr. Eve Perrin, and lighthouse keeper / recluse Flynn Alverton. Told from first person point of view (Eve) and third person (Flynn) THE SECRET THIEF follows Dr. Eve Perrin as she embarks on a new journey in life. Exiled from the art world for sins of the past Eve goes in search of peace and anonymity in the small seaside town of Castille, Maine where she finds comfort in the small cottage she inherited from her Uncle Max. With limited money and no job on the horizon our heroine is offered a position, sorting and cataloguing a library of books, from the town recluse. Enter Flynn Alverton, and the man with whom Eve will fall in love. What ensues is the slow building relationship between Flynn and Eve; the potential fall out as Eve’s past comes to the surface, and a local threat from an unlikely source. The secondary and supporting characters are colorful and energetic-from business owners to the town political elite wherein Eve’s history will become town gossip, and Flynn’s past will come to bear in his growing love for our story line heroine. Nina Lane has the ability to seduce the reader into her story lines. We become one with the characters as the author slowly awakens our senses and arouses the possibilities of a happily ever after. There are several familiar scenarios reminiscent of the author’s Spiral of Bliss series-a series that will seduce the romance lover in every one. The attraction between Eve and Flynn is palpable but Flynn keeps secret his past-a past mired in guilt and grief. The fairy-tale romance is a reflection of Beauty and the Beast with all of the townspeople who struggle to accept the stranger in the woods. Vengeance will pursue our couple threatening the safety and quiet they have both been seeking. THE SECRET THIEF is a poetic and beautiful love story; a magical ride where Hans Christian Anderson and the Grimm Fairy-tales are woven into a tale of healing, second chances, romance, heartbreak and love. The premise is breath taking and heart warming; the romance is sensual and captivating; the characters are broken, edgy and flawed. Nina Lane’s imagination is inspiring, enchanting and wondrous.

A compelling and beautifully written story of loss, betrayal, redemption and ultimately love. Eve is a young woman that’s lived a life with only one person she could count on, her eccentric Uncle. He built his life and career around fairytales and taught her to believe in her dreams and herself. Facing his loss, she falls in the arms of someone she should have never trusted as he is nothing he seems. He steals her power, destroys her career to save himself, and breaks her so much she no longer trusts she can make good choices. Enduring the embarrassment she’s caused her apathetic, uncaring Mother, she retreats to the only place she has left, the home her Uncle left her after his passing. Hoping her past hasn’t followed her, she attempts to begin again only to find she cannot escape the horror her former lover has caused. Flynn, the mysterious light house keeper, has isolated himself intentionally hoping to keep his own past a secret. The blame he feels locks him away from others because he feels he is unworthy of the good life offers. Seeing Eve rekindles his desire to be more, be better and believe he can have a happy life. It also reignites his creative passions. He was the perfect blend of protector and broken that made you fall in love with him. Together they face their fears, learn to trust each other and themselves and forgive their mistakes. This book was gripping from the first sentence and I found myself re-reading immediately after finishing the first time. Nina Lane is a master of the English language and forces you to feel the words coming off the page. It had the perfect balance of mystery, romance, relatable characters and the tasteful steam her readers have come to love about her books. In an era where women are standing up and taking action against wrong doing, I found this to be a timely written book. It helped me to understand how, perhaps, those women felt when their power was taken from them.

As a poet, I am a lover of words. The Secret Thief fed into my love of prose using lyrical delivery and imaginative dialogue. Nina Lane used beautiful words and captivating emotion to unite two broken people. Flynn and Eve are in need of a second chance. Ms. Lane gave them the courage to find one. With each other. A surreal love song, that needs to be experienced.
