I first read the Darwath Trilogy in the early 80s. Over the ensuing years, I read it again, and again, and. . . well, you get the gist. Then, in one of our many moves, the box in which I'd placed the Trilogy joined the ranks of the 'missing.' Undoubtedly the work of the Dark! By the time of our great loss, the Trilogy was out of print. I dogged bookstores, constantly in search of replacements. Now, it appears the Trilogy is coming back. THANK GOODNESS! Along with Asimov, Eddings, and Tolkien, Barbara Hambly is one of my favorite and most re-read authors. Everyone I know feels the same. I'm sure you, too, will share these feelings.

I read a wide variety of novels for entertainment, but I remember very few of them for very long after finishing them. This series is one of few that I remember the title and author after years have passed. I think I first purchased a paperback copy at a used bookstore do the the anachronism of the cover art. A robed, old, bearded wizard complete with sword was sitting at a modern formica covered kitchen table drinking a beer from an aluminum can. I recall it being Budweiser, though it may have been a generic beer can. I loaned my copies of the series and never recovered them, but I should very much like to read them again. Bring this series out on e-books please!

Obviously a mastery of modern literature this book reads beautifully. Sculptured around modern times and medievil magic, it's thrilling and suspenseful yet provocativly satisfying. All in all, a definite classic, right along with eddings tolkien and goodkind a work of art so wonderfully put together it's a wonder it's not more well known

This is the begining of a wonderful series. The characters are incredible and it gives a different view of what people think of as evil.

I loved this book! The action picked up right away, leaving you in suspense and wanting to learn more. By the end of the book I was in a scramble to find the second book in this trilogy, the Walls of Air. I highly recommend it. You're not a true fantasy fan until you read this awesome book!

I am rereading this after many years and find it sadly dated and clumsy. The Rudy character is particularly ridiculous; what kind of royalty would be attracted to or wish to associate with such a lowbrow and unattractive person? And if she were so tasteless, her powerful brother would certainly not allow it for a minute. I very much like Hambly's Benjamin January books, but this fantasy is better left on the shelf.
