There are blocks of buildings where every space is occupied by a saloon. Men and women line up indiscriminately at the bars, drink their drinks, smoke their cigarettes, and solemnly discuss the situation in the old-fashioned style. If the men have no companions, they are quickly taken in tow by the girls employed by some of the saloon keepers, and who are ostensibly and perennially thirsty.
