Feisty Britt Kelly's life has blown up in her face. After her parents' divorce, her family moves from the suburbs of Trebridge into her half-sister's apartment in the projects. Britt must adjust to poverty, a new high school, and a step-mother who hates her and her younger brothers. But these aren't Britt's worst problems.
In the mage-fought Demon Wars, the minions of Prince Vetis have built a secret base in Trebridge behind the Kingscourt's battle lines. Like most humans, Britt didn't know demons existed before she was drafted to fight them with three new friends. Now she must fight against the evil that threatens her city.
As the demon forces grow, the Gargoyle Guardians of the city must teach the four teens to use enough "Grace" as a weapon to survive. Britt's new problem: learning to control her magical powers...in spite of Gillen, the gargoyle leader, pissing her off with his fussy rules and demands.

Theodoratus has been in love with fantasy since first discovering the Oz books as a child. She has never stopped delving into the fantasy worlds of other writers. She became inflicted with an addiction to story and writing after creating a Nancy Drew fan fiction novel for a school assignment. Her incomplete assignment turned into her first novel the summer after the sixth grade. Now, Theodoratus has created the worlds of Andor and Far Isles Half-Elven for readers to get lost in. Reviewed by Arya Fomonyuy for Readers' Favorite An interesting and engaging young adult urban fantasy, There Be Demons by M.K. Theodoratus is well-crafted with compelling characters. Gillen, who leads the four Gargoyle Guardians of the city, is forced to ask for reinforcements when imps and demons seize the streets of Trebridge. They are a nasty lot that are hoping to become even stronger. For reinforcement, he is sent four teenagers from the projects, led by Britt Kelly, a teen with a load of problems of her own. The reader follows Britt’s adventures as she is surprised by an effigy that unexpectedly turns into a gargoyle and expects her to fight demons, the possession of her step-mother by a demon, and her heart problems. Does she have what it takes to survive in this kind of world after suffering from the divorce of her parents? M.K. Theodoratus has created a world where readers experience a powerful intersection between the natural and the supernatural, a world of conflict where characters evolve under strange rules. The writing is great and I enjoyed the author’s unique sense of phraseology, the exquisite diction, and the powerful images that are left in the reader’s mind with each scene. The scenes are well-crafted, each designed to get the reader emotionally and psychologically involved in the story. The plot may seem simple, but it is woven with great intricacies and surprises. But what had me engaged throughout the entire story is Theodoratus’ gift for character and conflict. I loved the way Britt is developed. She experiences the conflict at multiple levels — emotional, psychological, and physical — and readers will be delighted by how she grows within the dynamics of the conflict. There Be Demons is a humorous, suspenseful story with great entertainment potential.
A conflict of interest is what seems to be the primary deal with this story. Demons need a warm environment to keep their young, and the people of Trebridge are fighting against the invasion in order to survive. The Gargoyles act as guardians, as Gillen leads them to war but he can’t do it alone, and so the Angeli send a group of teenagers to help them succeed. The storyline has a mixture of demons, magic, fantasy, battles and teenage drama. The concept of the story was interesting to read. What I believe it lacked a little was in its world development. I enjoyed the conflict between wanting to be a teenager and having a normal life rather than fighting and using their magic. The literature was easy to read and to follow. The story always kept its pace and the reader interested in wanting to know more about what’s going to happen next. I think what stood out was the multi-disciplinary approach towards the genre. It was apparent to see the mixture of fantasy, mystery, and suspense in the content of the story. This paranormal fantasy is something I believe most young adult readers would enjoy.
Demons have invaded Trebridge and it is up to Gillen and the Gargoyle Guardians to protect the city. But they cannot do this alone, Gillen is going to need back up. What he gets is Britt Kelly, a 14 year old girl with magical abilities that she would rather not have. Britt just wants to be a normal teenager and adjust to her new school. But Britt and three other teens are going to have to learn how to use their abilities to fight the demons and imps. You don’t have that many books that have gargoyles in them but I have to say that I think they are one of my favorite mythical creatures. Gillen is a great leader and I love how he works with the kids training them. Britt is a great, strong character for being 14 years old. I understand how she just wants to be “normal” but I enjoyed watching her grown into her role. There is a lot of action and a bunch of mistakes as the kids learn their limitations the hard way. This is a great story that is easy to get into and hard to put down. This is my first book of MK Theodoratus but it will not be my last. I do hope this becomes a series because I would love to follow more of Britt and Gillen’s adventures. I received There be Demons from Reading Addiction Virtual Book Tours for free. This has in no way influenced my opinion of this book.
