The purposeofthis book is to providea recordofthe stateofthe art in Topic Detection and Tracking (TDT) in a single place. Research in TDT has been going on for about five years, and publications related to it are scattered all over the place as technical reports, unpublished manuscripts, or in numerous conference proceedings. Topic Detection and Tracking is a body of research and an evaluation paradigm that addresses the event-based organization of broadcast news. To help researchers avoid unnecessary duplication and suggest interesting lines of pursuit, a dozen technical papers synthesize findings in the field since it began about five years ago, and are otherwise scattered in technical reports, unpublished manuscripts, and conference proceedings. Most discuss research carried out in evaluation workshops held in March and November 2000. Others explore the history, motivations, and some general results of the research; details of the evaluation paradigm; and the creation of the two major evaluation corpora, including stories, topics, and relevance judgements.
