Stevenson was set down in the middle of the 19th century and expired before its end. His life was short but brilliant. One of his principal means of fulfillment and discovery was travel.

In the Cevennes, Stevenson toured that lovely portion of France in 1878 with a donkey as his sole companion. The story is brisk and light, and moves along with Stevenson's sharp and memorable observations.
