Overview

Troublemaker by Linda Howard

A thrilling, fast-paced novel of romantic suspense from sensational New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Linda Howard.

For Morgan Yancy, an operative and team leader in a paramilitary group, nothing comes before his job. But when he’s ambushed and almost killed, his supervisor is determined to find out who’s after the members of his elite squad—and why. Due to worries that this unknown enemy will strike again, Morgan is sent to a remote location and told to lay low and stay vigilant. But between a tempting housemate he’s determined to protect and a deadly threat waiting in the shadows, keeping under the radar is proving to be his most dangerous mission yet.

The part-time police chief of a small West Virginian mountain town, Isabeau “Bo” Maran finally has her life figured out. She’s got friends, a dog, and a little money in the bank. Then Morgan Yancy shows up on her doorstep. Bo doesn’t need a mysterious man in her life—especially a troublemaker as enticing and secretive as Morgan.

The harder they fight the intense heat between them, the closer Morgan and Bo become, even though she knows he’s hiding from something. But discovering the truth could cost Bo more than she’s willing to give. And when Morgan’s cover is blown, it might just cost her life.

The story overall was good, however, she spent way too much time talking about the dog. Half of the story was spent describing the dog's habits and behavior and only a few pages actually had any action or suspense. I'm used to better from her.

Great book. I love, love, love Linda Howard. Could somebody please get the word out to her that her fans would love more books like TO DIE FOR and DROP DEAD GORGEOUS? A Southern sense of humor like hers shouldn't go to waste.

After waiting three years between books i was very disappointed. Interactions with residents of the town was stupid (was suppose to be funny). She spent too much time on the dog and made it a main character. Found the premise of someone not having law enforcement experience would be a police chief. Worst Linda Howard book I ever read

I reread Linda Howards books over and over because the character dynamics are gripping. I like dogs but was sick to death of reading abouts it's habits! The humans involved were great, just not enough about them! I will reread it, but I'm skipping over the dog stuff!

I have read all of Ms. Howard's books and look forward to each new release. This one just fell flat to me. The dog parts got old, but worse was that I just never really cared for her main characters. I didn't buy all of the animosity between step-siblings over an 8 month marriage 17 years ago. Overall, the story moved so slow, probably because of all of the dog description. Once the ending/climax was nearing, I found myself caring less and less and sadly putting the book down every few pages. This was a first for one of her books.

There is a reason Linda Howard is one of my favorite authors. Her books are excellent and this one doesn't disappoint. The characters grab you and don't let go. I resented everything that interrupted my reading. There is intrigue, humor, romance and a lovable dog.

I loved Tricks! Adding a dog to a story humanize the characters and shows their emotions more clearly!

I love Linda Howard and have read everything else she has written. This is by far the worst novel I've read in awhile. I almost couldn't finish it and finally resorted to just skipping pages just to get the story line. Super disappointing.

She sucks you in right from the being and leaves you wanting more!

Absolutely the worst Linda Howard book ever. Slow and boring is an understatement. I kept reading hopeing it would get better. It doesn't. I like dogs but this was ridiculous. The characters were not very likable. By the end of the book, I couldn't care less what happened.

Good story, however, the whole Tricks story line went too far overboard. I found myself skip reading past Tricks till I could back to the story.

Morgan just wanted to fish. To say his job is stressful would be the definition of understatement. He needed the time. Wanted it. What he didn’t want or need was the ambush that awaited him upon his return to his home. Bo is the Chief of Police; but job is purely administrative, or at least that what she thought. She’s not trained to handle physical altercations, but that doesn’t deter her if the situation calls for it. Together they make sense, even if it takes a while for them to realize it. Their relationship is no-nonsense, and despite the event that brought them together (him being shot and almost dying), they find it easy to be together. Their lives intertwine without much thought, and they just work. The star of the show is Tricks, Bo’s dog. Oh the many smiles and LOL moments I had. Until now, I’d never read about such a charismatic dog. She is a pure diva and she knows it…and so does everyone else. She charmed Morgan just like Bo had. I love Morgan’s rough façade. He’s straightforward, and his method of flirting…well, let’s just say I was crushing. He does his own thing. Never adhering to the status quo. And the way he let her know they’d be making love the first time was priceless. So alpha! YUM! I love Howard’s writing style. The first book I read by her was Cover of Night. There was a lot of setup and all of it had been necessary. Howard has a way of turning everyday, run-of-the-mill events into treasured reading. Even when nothing big was going on, I was all in. The “Free Doris mob” had me almost on the floor. It was the funniest thing. The townspeople will suck you in and make you wish you could relocate. As I expect and anxiously await in Howard’s stories, the action slipped right on in flawlessly. The suspense is blended without overshadowing the romance, and the love connection happens in spite of the danger, not because of it.

I wanted to read this book mainly based off the fact that it was written by Linda Howard, and I've been meaning to read her books for some time now. Also, I'm a sucker for the romantic suspense genre so that of course made me want to read this book more. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this book although I would classify it as more of a romance if I'm being honest. There were some elements of suspense but really this book was more focused on the romance developing between Morgan and Bo. And what a romance that was! One of the things that I love for my romance books to have is a realistic feel to them. I am not huge on when relationships happen overnight or when there is insta-love with no build up. In this book, Bo takes Morgan into her home not because she wants to but because she can't turn him away in the shape that is in. Their relationship develops over the course of the book (I don't really feel that this is a spoiler thanks to above summary) in a way that actually feels natural. Also, their relationship didn't just solve all of their problems either- another pet peeve of mine in romances. I just really loved the way the author set this book up in a way that you couldn't help but want to root for their happy ever after. I also really, really loved how much of this book was focused on Bo's dog Tricks. As my family just recently got a puppy, I adored how much of this book focused on Tricks and what an important part she played in Bo's life. This is definitely a dog lover's type of book which I found to be just perfect. There was never a time when Tricks didn't play an important part of the story which just really added to the story for me. I also loved that the author really brought the small town that Bo lived in to life. There were a bunch of secondary characters that I enjoyed reading about as well. I found this book to be the perfect read during a stressful time of year. I was able to just lose myself within this book's pages and the romance that was brewing between Bo and Morgan. Sometimes that is exactly what you need especially when life is hectic and busy. I liked that the ending tied everything up although I didn't find it to be as suspenseful as I expected. Really by that time I was okay with the lack of suspense. I was more focused on the romance and seeing how Morgan and Bo would work everything out. Overall, I enjoyed this book and found it to be a solid romance. I'm planning on reading more by this author, and I believe that she has an extensive backlist so I have a lot to look forward to which makes me happy. I'm glad that I finally took the plunge to give this author a try because it was a great reading experience. I think that both dog lovers and romance fans will enjoy this book. I can easily recommend this one! Bottom Line: A slow building romance that I really enjoyed! Disclosure: I received a copy of this book thanks to the publisher and Edelweiss

A charming and captivating tale where the small town living with its drama and triumphs are mixed into the dangerous world of espionage and international crime. The suspense and action in the story are brutal and lethal. The murder attempt against Morgan so clever it leaves the GO-team with no clues, and danger lurking around every corner. As the encounters with the large scale criminals are located in the beginning and the end of the story, there's an ample time and opportunity for Bo and Morgan to get to know each other, learn to trust each other and develop a relationship. I really enjoyed the characters, both Bo and Morgan are likable, charming, and relatable. In the relationship they are equal, the openness and honesty between them are refreshing. There's nothing instantaneous about their relationship that gets deeper, sweeter, and more meaningful as time goes by. Tricks, Bo's dog, steals the show at every turn. She has a serious princess complex. She has sass more than a teenage girl, and her loyalty and loving is something everyone on her path will get a taste of. The people in Hamrickville with their everyday life and its turmoils get a lots attention in the tale. The entertainment is guaranteed, and if I wasn't laughing at the tactics of Tricks, the princess, someone else in the town was making me smile for sure. With over forty print books in my library from the author, I am a true fan of Linda Howard's writing. It is detail oriented, with delightful and lovable characters, the stories make you smile with the humor, sigh with the sweet and tender romance, and bite your nails with the harsh and forceful, often deadly battles for justice and survival. Troublemaker is no different in that regard, from fights at the bakery, domestic trouble that involves the whole town, to large scale murder attempts, the conflicts are constant and potent. Yet the engaging characters with the details of their lives balance the story bringing out the humor and cheer, the tender and passionate adoration between Bo and Morgan create a wishful hope for the future, and Tricks with her antics and attitude brought out the belly laughs. This story was truly a big time treat with thrilling entertainment ~ Four Spoons with a teaspoon on the side

Troublemaker served as a reminder of why I'm a Linda Howard fan, but it took me completely out of my comfort zone. I am not now, nor have I ever been a paranormal fan, but there are authors that can get me to take a chance on a new genre. Ms. Howard is one of those. Her fast paced stories have always drawn my attention. Bo and Morgan had the complexity that I love and the mystery that I crave from suspense novels. More thriller than romance this story has chops to get the heart pumping but proved a little much for my taste.

You know the saying: "The way to a man's heart is though his stomach?" That’s pretty much the thought I had after reading Morgan and Isabeau's story, except is was more like: "The way to a woman's heart is though her dog". There is no doubt that the main character of this romantic suspense is Tricks-the-golden retriever. Along with Tricks, there are Morgan and Isabeau (Bo). Also, Troublemaker, to me, is more of a small town romance/suspense with some action scenes. I say that not in disappointment, but in true love for the storyline that Linda Howard has created, when the dangerous, undercover missions that these beautiful, tough military Secret Op guys do to serve and protect their country and get wounded. Except Morgan was shot after he thought he was safe at his home after just coming back from a mission, but Morgan doesn't know why anyone would want to shoot him or for what reason. The leader of Morgan's GO-Team sends Morgan to hide until they can figure out who wants Morgan dead. I really did like Bo. She is a strong, independent woman even though her strength comes from the walls she has built to protect herself. The only one she lets close is Tricks, her golden retriever. But when her step-brother, Axel, asks her for her help to hide Morgan out at her home while he heals, Bo finds her walls crumbling down around this dangerous, sexy man that's determined to penetrate her heart and find out who the real Bo is behind those walls. Morgan, oh yes Morgan Yancy is the handsome, strong, dangerous military soldier that had me swooning. Morgan’s not the kind of man that likes to be fussed over. Morgan is definitely the take-charge kind of guy. So Bo is definitely his kind of woman, a woman who’s also not a warm and fuzzy type. Yes, these two are made for each other. And their romance is steamy hot. Tricks the golden retriever was a cute addition in this romantic suspense/mystery novel. Tricks is the smart dog that enabled Morgan and Bo to open their eyes to see their love for each other. Troublemaker is a must read, especially if you love the dog being the star of the story.

One of the best ever for dog lovers, suspence, mystery and romance fans. This book has it all.

I admit I was skeptical when I read about the dog, but I absolutely love anything Linda Howard writes and frankly the dog sets the story apart from her usual romances. I thought the story was funny and interesting....with just enough difference to balance out the story.

Never the same ol plot & characters like Jayne Castle's books. LH has a consistent ability to draw me into her stories. Some i like more than others. You'll enjoy this one too.

Troublemaker by Linda Howard is awesome. This well written book has it all, suspense, action, humor and steam. Morgan and Bo's story is entertaining from cover to cover. Ms Howard's characters are fantastic but Tricks really stole the show. It's been a while since I've read a Linda Howard book and this was a real treat. I enjoyed reading Troublemaker and look forward to my next book by Linda Howard. Troublemaker is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger. I won a copy of this book from...lol..I think it was Goodreads.
