True-Blue Cowboy Christmas by Nicole Helm

"A delightfully intriguing and enticing story."—Publishers Weekly, STARRED Review

BIG SKY CHRISTMAS

Thack Lane has his hands full. For the past seven years, he's been struggling to move on from his wife's tragic death and raise a daughter all by his lonesome. He doesn't have time for himself, much less a cheerful new neighbor with a smile that can light up the ranch.

Christmas spirit? Bah, humbug.

With Christmas right around the corner, Summer Shaw is searching for somewhere to belong. When her neighbor's young daughter takes a shine to her, she is thrilled. But Thack is something else altogether. He's got walls around his heart that no amount of holiday wishes can scale. Yet as joy comes creeping back to the lonely homestead, Summer and Thack may just find their happily ever after before the last of the Christmas miracles are through...

My first book by this author, but it definitely won't be my last! True-Blue Cowboy Christmas is the third book in the Big Sky Cowboys series; it worked okay as a standalone, but I did wish I had read the first two books not so much for their main characters (Summer's brother and sister and their significant others) but to get more of Summer's backstory early on--I did feel a bit like I was playing catch up at the beginning of this one, not quite knowing what her story was. It wasn't a major issue, I just felt out of the loop early on. That said, I really liked Summer, Thack, and Kate (Thack's seven-year-old daughter)'s story. Ms. Helm did a great job digging into the emotional state of a guy who's been a widower since his daughter was tiny; it was hard not to feel for both him and Kate as they struggled between his need to keep her safe and protected and her need to find a friend. Summer's mental state was a bit trickier to fully understand, because we don't truly "get" what living with her mom must have been like until we near the end of the book, though she does give us clues along the way. It's a freaking miracle that she's managed to turn out as sunny and upbeat as she has, let me tell you--her mother is truly something else. But back to the main story...I thoroughly enjoyed watching Thack and Summer go from two people who didn't much like and definitely didn't trust one another to friends to something more. Little Katie was a refreshing mix of sweet and snarky 'tude--all I can say is Thack better watch out when that girl gets to her teen years! Good thing he's got Summer now, because he's going to need all the backup he can get. ;) The ending of this one really ramps up the intense factor; I had to go to work in the middle of it and it kept me distracted all morning long until I could finally finish on my lunch break. The holiday setting of the story is nicely balanced with everything else that's going on (we actually see the characters go from Halloween to Christmas as the story progresses)--it's there and a part of what's going on, especially for Summer who's still trying to find her own place in the family she'd never had before--but it doesn't hit you over the head with holiday spirit. Now it's time to back up and read Mel and Caleb's stories :) Rating: 4 stars / A- I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

This was a really cute Christmas romance with a contemporary western feel. There was just enough holiday in the story without going too overboard with the Christmas cheer - which is what I really like. There was a good chunk of backstory that missed having not read the previous books in the series, so I felt like I was missing something important (turns out I was). I'm not sure if I would recommend this as a true stand-alone. All the missing pieces come out in the end, but I think it had too much of an impact without knowing more of the backstory. Thack was a grump, a really big grump. His over-protective stance to his little girl was a bit much, but it made sense given his history. Here's where backstory would have been nice. Summer really over-reacts to this and jumps to a lot of conclusions. But this somehow manages to bring them together. The middle part of the story seems to be a series of misunderstandings and stepping on toes, but there were some really cute parts that I really enjoyed, especially the ones that revolved around getting ready for the holidays. Summer and the little girl are quite the pair and I loved seeing them together. The ending went quite a bit overboard. It lost me while at the same time explained a lot about Summer's reaction to things. But a little too over the top with the suspenseful part for me to get completely on board with. *This book was received in exchange for an honest review*

With her latest in the Big Sky Cowboys series, Nicole Helm brings us a story filled with past heartache, new dreams and an adorable lil' princess bringing the two together! Great characters keep you hoping for a happily ever after to give them the future they deserve. Summer Shaw is spending the time right before the holidays trying to find a place to fit in with her family. She's has a happy-go-lucky, people pleasing attitude, and wants to be needed. When a precious little girl wanders up to her and thinks she's a fairy princess, she just melts! Thack Lane lost his wife years ago now, but he hasn't moved on with his life. He spends all of his time simply taking care of all his responsibilities and doesn't even want more. With the heartache he's been through, he just expects that to be the life that he's going to lead. When his young daughter takes a shine to the quirky neighbor, he begrudgingly agrees to let them spend time together. As Summer gives his daughter the bubbly atmosphere she's been missing, Thack can't help but admire the beautiful woman she is. Will these two find the start of their happily ever after before the holidays even get here?

Summer has lead a life that has not always been peaceful and far from happy. So when she made the decision to become the keeper of her own destiny, she knew it wouldn't be easy but the reward had to be better than the past she yearns to forget. Nicole Helm is an author that it's always a pleasure to read. Her characters are identifiable, her stories are compelling and the powerful messages that are imparted within each story are relatable to everyday life. True-Blue Cowboy Christmas is a story of magic, hope and healing. The ability to believe there is something better on the horizon is an uplifting thought. Summer didn't wait for her future to find her, she went out and grabbed it for herself.
