Brilliantly funny and intriguing, Tuppenny Hat Detective is a nostalgic mystery story set in Sheffield, England as the city struggles to recover from World-War-Two. Salty Ess

"The world of Billy and his friends is realised in a full and convincing way. There are some splendidly tense and poignant scenes."

Prize winning author Alex Martin

"A real page turner - with a very winning central character. Despite the murders it was thoroughly good fun and a graphic picture of a time I well remember myself."

About the Author

Heavy cranes, satellite tracking and the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles, have long loomed large in my life. I was born and raised on the edge of the Peak District, in a suburb of Sheffield, South Yorkshire, overlooking roaring steelworks and gloriously wild and beautiful moorland.

As a child I managed to ensure that education had little or no effect upon me, and so had to read and learn like crazy once I discovered that I really ought to have been paying attention.

My first novel, The Whispering Bell, set in the Peak District of circa 650 AD, was spotted by my publisher on the writers' website YouWriteOn.com. My second, Tuppenny Hat Detective, is very different, being a nostalgic detective story set in Sheffield in 1951.

I made my living selling heavy engineering services, travelling extensively,in Europe, USA, the Far East, and Australasia.

I adore my long suffering wife, love writing, cabinet making, the British countryside and its wildlife, my dog Wulfi, real ale in old pubs, and football. My wife and I live on the Somerset Wiltshire border a few miles south of the city of Bath.

Loved the historical feel. Good mystery with plot twists. Marvelous characters. Will recommend to others.

I really enjoyed this book. I like the British mysteries anyway, and this one is written from--what I consider--a unique angle. There are not many mysteries featuring children as the ones doing the detecting--at least not many that would not be considered children's books.

Lovely "feel good" book; fun plot, characters you fall in love with; transported to another time infused with great accuracy, you can see the streets and smell the atmosphere; great book to curl up with

Excellent period piece with charming characters and a plot that kept me guessing until the end.

This is a light quirky read. It is done from a "kids" point of view. This is not your hard core mystery read so if that is what you are looking for this is not for you. I found it fun and from a different perspective than most mysteries. The old English/providence slang used through out is mixed with traditional English, this helps to set the "mood" of the book but can be a little distracting. Heck it is a free read and kept me entertained. Happy reading!

There's nothing wrong with this book; it's well-crafted and meticulously sets the scene of post war Sheffield. I easily imagined myself experiencing the sights and sounds through the eyes of the children. However, I wasn't excited by this book. It just lacked that 'extra something'.

Well written mystery that keeps you guessing til the very end! Written from the perspective of an eleven year old, however; definitely an adult story. If you love British cozy mysteries, complete with a vicar, you will enjoy this book, free from sex, swearing or gore.

Beautifully witten and wonderfully detailed - felt I was really living in Sheffield in 1950 reading this. Lots of subtle humor and interesting characters. Some typical flaws in the mystery - certain things were overly emphasized/telegraphed, while other information was withheld until the main character made conclusions based on it. However these flaws seem trivial to me compared to the quiet beauty of the story. Loved it and I'm definitely buying the next one.

This was a great book, it gave me all the clues I needed to figure out who did the crime and to find out I was totally wrong in the end. I am looking forward to the second book and hope that it will be a continued series. Thank you Mr. Sellars for hours of entertaining and enjoyable reading.

Since it was advertised for younger audience I was not sure that I would like it.. But I am glad that I got it... I enjoyed this book. Those children are smart and I enjoyed the way that they solved the crimes set forth in this book. Though adults did not always believe them ~ they did not give up
