Turtle in Paradise by Jennifer L. Holm

In Jennifer L. Holm's New York Times bestselling, Newbery Honor winning middle grade historical fiction novel, life isn't like the movies. But then again, 11-year-old Turtle is no Shirley Temple. She's smart and tough and has seen enough of the world not to expect a Hollywood ending. After all, it's 1935 and jobs and money and sometimes even dreams are scarce. So when Turtle's mama gets a job housekeeping for a lady who doesn't like kids, Turtle says goodbye without a tear and heads off to Key West, Florida to live with relatives she's never met. Florida's like nothing Turtle's ever seen before though. It's hot and strange, full of rag tag boy cousins, family secrets, scams, and even buried pirate treasure! Before she knows what's happened, Turtle finds herself coming out of the shell she's spent her life building, and as she does, her world opens up in the most unexpected ways. Filled with adventure, humor and heart, Turtle in Paradise is an instant classic both boys and girls with love.

Includes an Author's Note with photographs and further background on the Great Depression, as well as additional resources and websites.

Over the weekend I had some spare time and decided to read a couple of chapters of Turtle in Paradise. I ended up finishing the whole book in one day. It was THAT good!!!!!

If you're a victim of "The Keys Disease" you'll love every word of this book. Based on actual events and Conch characters in the 1930's, it captures the true essence of old Key West before the mainstay of local livelihood became tourism. It makes my heart yearn for the simple, laidback days when Key West was truly a tiny island at the end of US 1 that harbored the founding Conchs of the island I love.

This is an outstanding book. It is about a girl named Turtle who's mom is a maid during the great depression. When Turtle's mom must take a job as the maid in a house that does not allow Turtle to stay there with her mom, so Turtle must move to Key West with her aunt and three cousins (all boys). She comes with a suitcase and her cat a day before the letter announcing that she would have to say with them. Now she must learn to live with her cousins and aunt and in the same town as her grandmother. This is an amazing book, a must read!
