Tara Mata (1900-1971) nació en San Francisco (California). Conoció a Paramahansa Yogananda en 1924 y profesó sus votos definitivos como renunciante en 1936. Bajo la dirección de Paramahansa Yogananda llegó a ser editora jefe de las publicaciones de Self-Realization Fellowship y también desempeñó los cargos de miembro del Consejo Directivo y vicepresidenta de la organización (1960-1966). Tara Mata escribió numerosos artículos sobre la ciencia y filosofía del Yoga; ella falleció en 1971.
