Unwrapping Christmas begins with a bold retelling of the original Christmas story. Then it tells the contemporary story of several individuals and families as they struggle to find meaning and community and love during the Christmas season. While it is a story told from several points of view, each character is led to helping or knowing Josiah, a twelve-year-old boy who gets lost in the mountains near Leavenworth, Washington, while watching his neighbor Gabriel's dogs, Blitzen and Vixen. As Josiah is forced to survive in subfreezing temperatures, his father questions himself. Does he have the wherewithal to save his son when he wasn't able to save his beloved wife from cancer? Finally, it is Gabriel, a famous classical guitar player, who weaves all the stories together. Music, like love, touches all, even the reader. About the Author

I love Faulkner and McCullers and Wharton and Morrison. These were my first teachers, my first glimpse at writing. I wanted to emulate them. I wanted to create worlds, and lives full of pain and love and beauty, lives that taught me something.

I have always been a dreamer. As a girl, I dreamed of passion, and pure fulfillment—I believed these states could be obtained. As I became an adult, it was art that seemed to bring these feelings more than anything.

From listening to Dvorak, Bach, André Sergovia, The Dave Matthews Band, and Hapa. From watching The Dead Poet's Society and A Beautiful Life. From reading The Awakening, The Poisonwood Bible, White Oleander, Wuthering Heights, The Count of Monte Cristo, and Of Mice and Men, and recently The Nightingale, and All the Light We Cannot See, and Beautiful.
