Vito's Journey by Vito A. Lepore

Join Vito on his life's journey, a very bumpy ride, as he transitions from an ancient small town in Southern Italy to America, as seen through his eyes. The early years, the coming to America just befor WWII, the first traffic light at age nine, living in the Bronx, school and sports, the first kiss; Experiences that are sometimes happy, sometimes sad, sometimes puzzling, but always entertaining. The separate chapter on the favorite family stories is particularly funny, and you'll love Mikey and uncle Larry. It has elements of an Italian version of Alex Haley's "Roots", together with experiences that Dennis the Menace might have, if he ever decides to grow older,

It is intended to also stimulate the reader's interest in their own family history.

I read this entire book on the plane from California to Tampa. I couldn't put it down and I didn't want it to end. The characters are vivid and the stories are engaging. This is not just one man's story, or one family's story, it's not just an immigrant's story (although it certainly is that), what Vito Lepore captures is at once the charm and confusion of growing up in 1930's - 40's America. The stories are endearing and touching, and a few are just plain "cattivo" (naughty). I hope he writes a sequel. I would love to read about the trouble he got into during the 1950's, 60's and beyond!

My name is Scoop, and my friend is Ham. We are Vito's imaginary friends from his childhood. We can't tell you how happy we are that he decided to write this book, and keep us alive. We did a lot things together, and it would be a shame to lose those memories. Some were fun, some not-so-much. True, he didn't create us until he was almost a teenager, but we know him better than anyone, with the possible exception of Mikey. Vito was born in Brooklyn, and raised in Italy and the Bronx. Bouncing between two cultures, makes for some entertaining stories. We highly recommend it - you must check it out.
