About the Author

Barbara Taylor Sissel writes issue-driven women’s fiction threaded with elements of suspense, which particularly explores how families respond to the tragedy of crime. She is the author of eight previous novels: The Last Innocent Hour, The Ninth Step, The Volunteer, Evidence of Life, Safekeeping, Crooked Little Lies, Faultlines, and The Truth We Bury. Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, Barbara was raised in various locations across the Midwest and once lived on the grounds of a first-offender prison facility, where she interacted with the inmates, their families, and the people who worked with them. The experience made a profound impression on her and provided her with a unique insight into the circumstances of the crimes that were committed and the often-surprising ways the justice system moved to deal with them. An avid gardener, Barbara has two sons and lives on a farm in the Texas Hill Country outside Austin. Gilly has “visions” that she can’t control and often only frustrate her with their lack of useful details. Jake pushes her to help him find his daughter Zoe who’s been kidnapped, because he doesn’t understand how Gilly’s visions work. Both of their pasts come creeping in to haunt them, endangering Gilly as well. Sissell writes compelling characters with complex backgrounds, which are shared with beautiful and timely exposition, exploring how far-reaching the consequences of poor judgment and denial. The ending’s revelation is astonishing, and heartening, in its humanity. Fans of Diane Chamberlain and Kristin Hannah will appreciate Sissel’s work. It’s a definite must-read!

I loved the book and it's my favorite book by Barbara Taylor Sissel. I recognized some names of characters from some of the author's previous books. The book was fast paced and there were some unexpected twists. I enjoyed the story-line, characters and writing style. Gilly finds herself waitressing in a small Texas town after fleeing Houston. She is struggling with sobriety and the death of her husband. Gilly also has premonitions/dreams but doesn't want to be called a psychic. Her story gets intertwined with Jake's when his three year old daughter is abducted and Gilly happened to dream it. I was pretty sure who was involved in the kidnapping. I didn't know why they were involve, who their true identity was or how they were connected to Jake. Gilly always found her gift of visions as curse, especially since her parents told her to stop having them because they disturbed people. Her dad even called her a freak. Gilly even blamed herself for her father leaving. I couldn't believe when Gilly found out that her visions were passed on to her through her mom and that she could of had someone to help her instead of criticize her. I definitely recommend the book and look forward to reading more by the author.

Gilly sometimes has dreams. She was in the third grade when she dreamed that her best friend's brother was going to be shot in a hunting accident. She spoke up, told her best friend. It didn't happen. She lost her best friend. She dreamed later on in life that her husband, Brian, was going to be shot in robbery. He was. Now trying to move on, she has moved to a new town, lost her architectural business and is now working as a waitress in a small town cafe. One of her customers is a four year old little girl, Zoe, that Gilly adores. She makes her animal pancakes every Wednesday. One day Gilly dreams that Zoe is taken by a woman in a metallic blue sedan. Her legs go dead beneath her the next day when it actually happens. The disappearance of Zoe brings everyone, good and bad, out of the woodwork when that dream is revealed on TV. What follows is a suspenseful plot twisted story that brings Gilly's past front and center. An excellent read that I just sped through and could not put down. Thanks to Lake Union Publishing and Net Galley for providing me with a free e-galley in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.

Buckle up because What Lies Below by Barbara Taylor Sissel is a wild ride of what if’s & oh my gods! In this fast paced novel, the reader finds themselves speculating possible kidnappers of sweet little Zoe, only to find another twist proving the reader wrong. Sissel does a fantastic job creating a strong, brave female character that’s also broken. Sissel’s character Billy has gone through many, many devastations, & yet still finds power within herself. What Lies Below has many wonderful characters, but the immense presence of Gilly, is by far an aspect that many female characters lack in novel. Gilly very quickly became one of my favorite heroines! What Lies Below has gained a very rare 5 stars from me! It’s brilliant, and wonderfully crafted! Reading it feels as if you’re actually watching the scenes unfold! I HIGHLY recommend everyone to throw this novel in your immediate TBR pile because it’s simply astounding!

Barbara Taylor Sissel had me feeling as if I was actually in this story and trying to solve the mystery of Zoe's kidnapping! I read it in a day and actually dreamt about it during the night! Zoe is a four year old sweet little girl whose Dad is raising her due to her Mom being unable or unwilling to be a parent. Jake, her Dad is caring for his daughter and doing a tremendous job. They go each Wednesday to Cricket's cafe where Gilly the waitress make special animal shaped pancakes for breakfast. She enjoys entertaining Zoe with stories each week. But Gilly has secrets, many secrets that will be revealed. One is that Gilly has dreams that often precede an actual occurrence of something happening. Nobody believes her, so she feels it is best to be quiet. Zoe is abducted at her school playground one afternoon without a trace. Can and will Gilly be able to help find her and do the authorities believe her when she tells them of her "gift"? Do yourself a favor and sit and read this novel. You will be hanging on your seat and looking for clues as I did!

I couldn't put it down! Like others, once I started reading this one, I couldn’t put it down; nothing got done until I was finished with it. Two perfectly imperfect and flawed characters, each having to deal with every parent’s nightmare: losing a child, either by death or kidnapping. What’s worse is having a “gift” that shows you something bad is going to happen, but feel helpless to stop it. The characters were so well written, I could feel my heart breaking for them as they dealt with the situation they found themselves in. Each had their own demons, guilt, and anger to overcome as they moved forward. There were so many twists and turns, you have to hold on tight. When I finished this one, the first thing I wanted to do was to find my kids and hold them tight. Once you start this one, be prepared to forget everything else because you won’t want to stop reading it. #LakeUnion #WhatLiesBelow

Thank you to NetGalley and Lake Union for this book. What would you do if you lost everything. If your world was turned upside down by one person’s actions. If your best friend, husband, was killed in a senseless act. You lost your baby because of that? Would you seek revenge? Would you turn to anything to help you forget? What if your child was taken. Kidnapped. And you had no idea where she was or who had her. Only that you was not there to protect her. Gilly’s whole world was crushed when her husband was killed in a convenience store robbery gone bad. She was 26 weeks pregnant and it caused her to go into early labor. She lost her baby and her husband. She turned to alcohol and at times drugs to forget. To escape that pain. She ends up in a small town in Texas trying to start a new life. To escape the things in her past. She’s finally clean and sober and needs a new start. Jake is a single dad. He has custody of his baby girl. A three year old daughter who is his world. Then the unthinkable happens. She’s taken. Someone has her and he is desperate to get her back. He taught her to never go with strangers, but what if it’s her mother. She would feel safe going with her mom. Jake races to find his daughter before it’s to late. Gilly has had dreams her whole life. Dreams of things that happen before they happen. She dreamed of Zoe being taken from her preschool. Saw the person, and the car. But only in a dream. Would anyone believe her? She had to try and help. This book will keep you on the edge and rooting for a father who loves his little girl more than life and for a woman who lost everything. It kept me turning pages when I should have been doing other things. It’s an emotional story of what ifs and who dunits. It’s a story of lost loves, lost lives. Mental illness. Desperation. Desperation to find a way to keep your family whole. Desperate acts that cause so much pain. Is forgiveness in the stars for anyone who does such awful things. I have to believe maybe we all are capable of forgiving to some degree. I hope anyway. This is a very good story. One you won’t forget. A 5 star book. I loved it. I loved the start, middle and ending. It was well written. I love Barbara Sissel’s books. I’ve enjoyed a couple and have a few more to read. She knows how to weave a story and pull you in from the start and hold her hostage until the very end.

A blend of mystery, suspense, and foreboding nightmares. This is a multi-layered story that gripped me from the beginning. Gilly O’Connell is such a sympathetic character and my heart ached for her as she struggled with the guilt she carried concerning her husband’s murder. This is because she had a vision about it and instead of warning him she simply dismissed it as another bad dream. How can she possibly forgive herself? I could feel Gilly’s pain and wanted to be her friend (as she certainly needed one). I loved her strength beneath all the pain she was feeling. Wanting to get her life back on track, she moves to a quiet town and becomes a waitress in a café. Things don’t stay quiet for long as news of a child abduction is reported. There is an underlying tension that builds as details surface. Does she dare reveal her latest dream? Could it help solve the crime? Could it backfire? She is determined not to repeat history. The flow of the story was perfection and pulsed forward as the hunt for the child became intense. My heart was racing as I held my breath during one of the final scenes. I couldn’t stop reading until I found out what happened. I kept changing my mind about who the kidnapper was and NO, I didn’t predict the ending! If you love suspense and an unpredictable mystery, this one is a Fantastic Ride!!! 4 Stars Arc provided

The majority of us have reading lists such as TBRs, Wishlists and Authors To Read list. Plus I have a list for Authors that are imperative that I read, or in other words, drop everything that I am doing and read. Barbara Taylor Sissel is on this list. Gilly O'Connell has moved to Wyatt, TX hoping to restart her life after the trauma of losing her husband to murder, a daughter and a downward spiral of self medicating with drugs and alcohol. What makes it worse is that she had one of her "dreams" the night before of the murder but tried suppressing it. She has been living with the guilt of not acting on that "dream". And now, a child she has gotten to know and care about, Zoe, has been abducted. And the "dreams" are starting again. This time does she act on them or are people going to look at her as a suspect? Barbara Taylor Sissel, from the first page, draws the reader in and doesn't let go until the final word. She has an extraordinary writing style that pulls the reader into the story, and settings, where one feels like they are a bystander. An excellent example of being transported whereas this reader was so engrossed in the story that I was not cognitive of my surroundings. When I started reading WHAT LIES BELOW, I planned on reading a couple of chapters and then realized I had been reading for 5 hours and was halfway done with the book. An exciting read! The suspense and action continuous! Riveting! And then BANG! Picking my jaw off the ground because I didn't see what came next. Shocking! And only as Ms. Sissel does, throws in another explosion! A dynamic powerhouse of a read!! After reading most of her books, see below for my previous reviews, I keep thinking that I will figure it out. Not even close!!! I was blindsided by the ending! I highly encourage you to preorder this book. And in the meantime, pick up some of her previous novels. I guarantee you will be putting her on your "drop everything and read" list!
