Wicked Mourning by Heather Boyd

Widow Clara Blackstone is a faithful woman who has mourned her philandering husband for the last six months. Sheltered from pity and whispering tongues at a friend's country estate, Clara awaits the birth of her first child with mounting confusion. Despite the tiny life growing inside her, she dreams of passion in Reggie's arms. And the erotic fantasies grow more compelling every day.

When Reginald Moore's wife died in the arms of her lover, Clara's husband, he whisked pregnant Clara away from false friends to his country estate to avoid the strain of the scandal. After six months of pretence, Reggie is done mourning his faithless wife and, despite his originally noble intentions, he longs to have Clara in his bed - unborn child and all.

But are his skills of persuasion enough to convince Clara to set aside her grief for a faithless man and choose a new life with the one who stood by her, no matter the obstacle?

Author's note: this story contains a red hot romance between two wicked mourners around one rather large baby bump. A regency short story.

Reginald's best friend's pregnant wife is living with him until the child is born at which time she will go and live with her horrible in-laws. Clara is still grieving for the husband who cheated on her with Reginald's wife. Each of them fantasizes about the other in the dark of night until finally, they make it happen. I enjoyed this book and will purchase others by this author.

A very short, quick read. The characters are barely introduced when the story ends. The backstory (her husband with his wife) could have been fleshed out a bit more. I would love it if this story were expanded into a full-length novel since the whole premise seems fascinating.

Very short story...would have been a good story, felt like I read just the two middle chapters. Risque love scene.

I guess it's a short story so i shouldn't expect too much. I kept wondering if the book was written just to paint the sex scene.

Reggie and Clara's love story after their spouses betray them is sweet and funny. I wish it wasn't so short.

The preface (blurb) did a great deal to provide setting & circumstances, so the very short story could simply begin! I love fiction. It's always about suspending disbelief and enjoying the story. And that's exactly what WICKED MOURNING was....suspending disbelief (despite society's rules, the expectations today's world has of how people during the Regency era behaved). I could completely believe that these two cared for each other, had become enamored, wanted more than a friendship. In so few pages, the author accomplished much: showing us Reggie had fallen for Clara, illustrated Reggie's character enough that we see how honorable he is (despite seducing a widow during her mourning), and the way he puts the elder Mrs. Blackstone in her place was fabulous! Clara, the widow wronged, is immediately sympathetic....and it's great to see her get her happy ending. It's a VERY short story...my reader shows 22 pages of actual story; the rest is front matter and end matter (about the author, other books, a preview of another work). I agree with other reviewers...it's NOT erotica. Graphic, true. But sweet, gentle lovemaking between Reggie and Clara, who've fallen in love and really don't care what other people will think.
