About the Author

Born into a musical family on the island of Trinidad in the Caribbean, and with a passion for touching lives through dual ministry, Cheryl bares her soul as she shares a sometimes exasperating and painful journey in partnership, as reluctantly she is forced into "Solo Street" at the crossroads. Her headlamps for unsuspecting travelers are identified with humor and resilience. Her skills were honed on the campus of Caribbean Union College, (now University of the Southern Caribbean), a private denominational institution in the lush Maracas Valley countryside. Cheryl can always be found blessing others with her musical talents, literary skills and constant optimism. Continuing sources of joy are the performances of her 100 voice junior choir members of yesteryear, most of whom have now blossomed and excelled, especially in their own musical careers. This includes her son Chelton Jon, the founder and director of his own Brooklyn-based, gospel singing ministry, "Laos In Harmony". The joy of the Lord is her strength.

Not really knowing what to expect from the book's title, I was pleasantly surprised and immediately impressed with the author's candor in her account of what most would consider to be a very sensitive and private subject.  It was tastefully written with some elements of laughter, yet it gripped at the heart's strings because there was obviously so much pain there.  Don't be fooled though, for although it is an account of pain and deceit, it shows the author's ability to reach into her inner soul and draw from resources which were obviously instilled in her by strong and resourceful parents. most importantly, it demonstrates what happens when God becomes our strength and shield and the One on whom we lean heavily for support. There is the opportunity not only to be surprised at His strength through the human vessel , but at the power of forgiveness when rightly exercised and the peace of mind born of that forgiveness. Kudos to the author for a job well done! I would strongly recommend this book to be shared and discussed in seminar-type settings. Much wisdom can be gained.

This book is more than an autobiography/memoir; it’s a testimony and story of praise to our Heavenly Father. In spite of the pain the author endured, one can clearly see that God used the trials in Sis. Thorpe’s life to re-mold her into His image while providing the peace that “surpasses all understanding”. If you have ever experienced one of the following emotions: love, hurt, anger, betrayal, happiness, sadness, disappointment, success or failure, then this book is for you. In other words, it’s rated “E for Everyone” since we all can find something to relate to in it.

A captivating read in which the writer dares to be transparent with her life to encourage others that there is a way out. Though the story contains a mixture of emotions-love, happiness, sadness, grief, anger-and uncertainty of outcomes I so glad it doesn't end on that note. What is refreshing is that although the writer was experiencing trial and tribulation she chose to hold to God's unchanging hand continuing to Praise Him through her circumstances. Its an excellent reminder that God is Jehovah Jireh--your Provider. He's always there to take your hand and walk beside or carry you in life's journey. Wow, compelling read. The author pulls you in with her easy-going conversational literary style (of HARD topics) and you literally can't put the book down! It's a story that pays homage to the human spirit and being able to overcome/withstand some of life's worst hurts with grace, positivity and an inner strength fueled by the love of God. This is a must read for everyone regardless of gender, marital status, or walk of life. Blessings to the author!

It takes courage to endure what Cheryl did, but to then write about it...wow. I was intrigued by the title of the book, but as I read her story I was amazed by her strength and selflessness. This book made me question whether I had the level of faith and patience she had in God and her marriage. I have always heard that marriage is difficult, but you don't often hear about the intimate challenges spouses face over time. I appreciate her disclosure and willingness to not only teach but counsel others on relationships. I will always treasure her testimony and reflect often on the questions she poses at the end of every chapter. I can only pray that I learn from her story as I continue on my journey to become a virtuous, faithful, and praying woman of God.

I finished reading.  A modern day testimony...... A testimony a wife, who like most spouses, learns that you cannot change others but more than that, I read a testimony of God working in her life, calling her to trust Him, calling her to have a friendship with Him to rely on His mercy and grace. A wife holding on to God while He is pulling her, ever so gently through trials and bitter reality into a blossoming relationship  in solitude with Him.  Between the lines I read the testimony of a husband, holding on to faithfulness to God and to church, and to ministry even through his own personal struggles. He falls, and yes he fails but he never runs away from the atmosphere of worship. I'm grateful to the author for both testimonies it brings encouragement to others when life makes it so easy to move away and lose faith in God. Encouragement when everything and everyone seems to not understand or be willing to give aid during the experiences when God pulls us away from our comfort zones, away from all we understood to be the way life was supposed to be, away from our ability to control and maintain what we know as "stability". All the while never realizing, until we look back, that the only true "stability"  is the pulling away and the drawing into His own embrace. What we know as stability is self-reliance and what God teaches us and what was shown in this book is that too often God has to destabilize everything we know in order to place us in "Divine stability" which for us humans is chaos.  Thank you Cheryl for braving the "elements" with your testimonies. May the Lord bless you both as you continue to allow Him to  "Pull and Embrace" you in the depths of His heart.    Dianne

I just finished reading this book and I cannot say enough about how powerful the story is. It didn't take long for me to be drawn in to Cheryl's gripping story of triumph over something that many people have had to deal with, and once I started reading, it was impossible to stop! She has a way of writing that makes reading this book a true pleasure, while her story speaks such truth about the rut people can get themselves stuck in without realizing until it is too late. I cannot wait to see what she does next!

“I had the opportunity to read your book today. It was so good that I literally closed my door at work and read the entire book.  It is awesome!! Such easy reading and the content draws you in and makes you want to read on. Not a whole lot of drama  but it reflects some serious life experiences that many women can relate to (including me) and that many of us won't talk about.  Thank you for making it real and for helping to reinforce that there is nothing wrong with me as I'm torn apart dealing with some  of the same recurring issues. Excellent job!”  ("GeeGee")
