Meet the Author

Art Smith grew up in the small farming town of Jasper, in the Panhandle of Florida. While attending Florida State University, he completed two prestigious internships with The Greenbrier resort and was selected for the Walt Disney Magic Kingdom College Program. At the age of twenty-four, he was hired by Governor Bob Graham, now a U.S. Senator, and his wife Adele as executive chef of the Florida Governor's Mansion.
Art next traveled extensively through Europe and Africa as a family chef aboard several transatlantic motor yachts. Upon his return to the States, he took a position as chef on the American European Express Train. This led him to Chicago, where he began a career as a teacher at Williams-Sonoma and later as a private chef for the families of various celebrities.
Since the spring of 1977, he has been the personal chef to Oprah Winfrey and Stedman Graham. He is a contributing editor to O magazine and writes a monthly column for the food page of Oprah.com.

    Excellent Book!

    I love this book for so many reasons. This is the first cookbook I ever owned. As a single girl living alone in another country, I needed a cookbook in English to help me learn how to cook. While not a beginner level cookbook, the recipes are varied and easy to follow. But most importantly Chef Smith's stories about his family are beautiful and taught me how important the link between food and family is. It made me falk in love with cooking and the pleasure one gets from feeding others.

    A Recipe for Life!

    I recommend this book after having used it myself. It is filled with many great recipes. More than that, it contemplates that family unity is so very important for memories of tradition.     a really solid, beautiful and necessary book for anyone's kitchen

    the book is beautifully laid out and contains a cartfull of great dishes. My family has made at least 6 entrees which turned out fabulously. Its a must for anyone who cooks.

    i believe this book represents what family is all about. Its more than a cook book its the way life should be lived.
