Overview

Every day 1,500 Bostonians can't resist buying sweet, simple treats such as Homemade Pop-Tarts, from an alumna of Harvard with a degree in economics. From Brioche au Chocolat and Lemon Raspberry Cake to perfect croissants, Flour Bakery-owner Joanne Chang's repertoire of baked goods is deep and satisfying. While at Harvard she discovered that nothing made her happier than baking cookies leading her on a path that eventually resulted in a sticky bun triumph over Bobby Flay on the Food Network'sThrowdown. Almost 150 Flour recipes such as Milky Way Tart and Dried Fruit Focaccia are included, plus Joanne's essential baking tips, making this mouthwatering collection an accessible, instant classic cookbook for the home baker.

    fabulous!!

This is a wonderful cookbook. Joanne is not only a gifted baker but a talent writer as well. She makes it feel like she is in your kitchen helping you with each recipe. I have made several treats and even the most complicated pastries came out great and I am not a skilled baker at all! A very fun book, my kids age 5 and 7 were able to help with the Oreo cookies and snicker-doodle. Highly recommend to anyone, you'll look like a master baker to your family and friends

I Love This Cookbook - a must have!

I love this cookbook. It has delicious recipes and lots of tips and techniques that help
make the baking process much easier. Not intimidating at all. I want to try every recipe!!!

Recipes good, but don't knock your socks off!!!

I have many, many baking books and so far, the recipes I have made are good, but not spectular. The banana bread was very good and I have made it several times. The choux pastry is not as good as other recipes I have used and would not make it again. The peanut butter cookies lack something. Joanne likes to let the ingredients speak for themselves and not be overwhelmed with a lot of additional flavors. I like that concept, but sometimes her food then tastes like it "needs something".

All in all - an ok book, not a bad book at all, but it just doesn't stand out.

    Flawless!

This book is a collection of recipes from the Flour Bakery which first opened in Boston (MA) back in 2000. The drool worthy photographs help to create a whimsical, almost retro feel to the book that takes nothing away from the professional quality of the recipes. Each page is full of Joanne Chang's passion for baking and her continued fascination with the transformations that take place when you combine simple ingredients like flour, sugar, eggs and butter. It is written in a casual manner, full of personal memories and anecdotes that will put even the most inexperienced baker at ease while preparing pâte feuilletée for the first time. Helpful baking tips are written in a clear, descriptive manner making intimidating techniques relatable for bakers of all levels. Lists of fundamental baking equipment and pantry essentials are also included, and ingredient amounts for recipes are given in both volume and weight measurements. The cookbook market has always been inundated with baking books. So what makes Flour stand out from the herd? Clearly written recipes that produce successful results and include a variety of treats that range from a simple peanut butter cookie to more high-falutin' creations such as Hazelnut-Almond Dacquoise. I dare you to open this book and instantly not want to make everything. In fact, I double dog dare you!

    Inspiring

This is an inspiring cookbook with its beautiful color photographs and the author's personal anecdotes about the recipes, her childhood, and her experiences as a pastry chef. It has traditional recipes for things such as ginger cookies, carrot cake, pumpkin pie and apple pie, but also included are different recipes for things like homemade pop-tarts, oreo cookies, and fig newtons, along with everything else including sweet rolls, puddings, savory breads, and cakes for all occasions.

I did try the buttermilk biscuits recipe which turned out well and look forward to trying the pop-tarts, the oreo cookies, lemon poppyseed pound cake, oatmeal-maple scones, and raspberry-rhubarb muffins.

Although the recipes don't seem to be what I would call quick and easy, the instructions are clear enough that an inexperienced baker could navigate his or her way through them. Recipe categories include breakfast treats, cookies, cakes, pies and tarts, other sweets, and breads. There are also chapters on techniques, equipment, explanation of ingredients, and the author's top baking tips.
