Overview

David Venable will be the first to tell you: He loves his food. And as the beloved host of QVC’s popular program, In the Kitchen with David,® he’s put that passion on mouthwatering display, welcoming some of the greatest names in the food world. But Venable’s own culinary skills—honed in the Carolina kitchens of his mother and grandmothers—are nothing short of remarkable and tantalizing.

Now, in his anticipated debut cookbook, Venable shares 150 delicious recipes of hearty, easy-to-make, comforting dishes. In the Kitchen with David covers everything from appetizers and breads to soups and salads to main courses and sides, as well as his lifelong love of bacon (The Divine Swine!). You’ll get ideas for quick Monday-to-Friday dinners, let-it-cook-all-weekend suppers, savory breakfasts and brunches, cocktail party fun, game-day eats, and family reunion feasts. And of course, no Southern-influenced cookbook is complete without a little something sweet. Venable’s favorites include

Party Starters: White Bean and Sun-Dried Tomato Dip, Chicken Nachos, Cheddar-Broccoli Poppers with Ranch Dipping Sauce, Cheesy Crab Stuffed Mushrooms
Supporting Players: Summer Squash Fritters with Garlic Dipping Sauce, Scrumptious Hush Puppies, Mom’s “Browned” Rice, Sweet Potato-Pineapple Casserole

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
QVC’s Venable has hosted cookbook authors and sold their wares to millions of viewers. His down-home, Southern style is evident in hearty, American classic cooking, with chapters devoted to biscuits, muffins, and quick breads; casseroles and one-pot meals; and “the divine swine,” in addition to more traditional categories such as soups, sides, and desserts. The writing is sunny, with “Make It Your Own” asides meant to inspire creativity, such as passing along salsa, avocado, and sour cream with the nachos The fare is predictably middle-of-the-road, crab-stuffed mushrooms, cream of broccoli soup, and chicken Cordon Bleu mingling with the occasional kitschy invention such as cheeseburger dumplings or mini-BLTs in bacon cups. While this volume brings nothing new in the way of flavors or technique to the existing cookbook cannon, Venable’s legions of fans will find plenty to savor. Color photos. (Oct.)

i love this cookbook. i hesitated to buy it because of the mixed reviews but i took a chance anyways, as i am a huge fan of the show. so glad i ordered it. i have tried a couple recipes so far and they turned out great!  and as for the tiny small print people keep mentioning..i dont see the problem? it is not that small or light so that i cannot read it and this is coming from someone who does wear glasses.  always something to complain about i guess.  overall i highly recommend this cookbook. easy to cook recipes!

I have watched David on QVC many times and enjoy his large, friendly personality and his skill in the kitchen. I have been married for 38 years, have always enjoyed trying recipes from different cookbooks and this one is my favorite! They are the kind of true southern delicious cimfort food recipes I've been looking for for a long time. I've made about eight of the recipes so far and as expected each one has been excellent! I think David should receive more attention than he does right now, he is a wonderful chef.

First: The publisher should have known better than to print a book like this with tiny and very light print.....its very difficult to read and I'm not in need of glasses..... Second: the much hyped macncheese recipe is not good at all (Velveeta, really?), meatloaf sucks, corn casserole has been around for centuries, weird ingredients, too much info on David and not enough photos of the recipes.....wasted my money on this one!!! I'm a hugh fan of David's QVC shoes, however, his cookbook sucks....sorry, David.
