7 Fun Snack and Picture Book Pairings for Kids
Many picture books feature a veritable smorgasbord of yummy food, from crowd-pleasing tacos to delectable donuts. It’s only natural to want to satisfy these literary-inspired cravings, while also feeding your kids’ hunger of reading. Serve up some fun book-themed snacks and watch them quickly disappear as your little bookworms happily nourish both their bodies and minds. Starting with breakfast and ending with dessert, I’ve rounded up a few of our favorite picture books that were just made to be indulged in with a little snack on the side.

Scrambled Eggs and Ham Biscuits with Green Eggs and Ham, by Dr. Seuss
What better way to spend a morning than with a little Dr. Seuss reading? Pair the classic Green Eggs and Ham with a hearty breakfast of scrambled eggs and ham biscuits, and your children will be on their way to a great day. Add a little fruit and yogurt, and get to reading about that Sam-I-am!

Tacos with All the Fixin’s (but hold the spicy salsa!) with Dragons Love Tacos, by Adam Rubin and Daniel Salmieri
If it’s around lunchtime, tacos are in order. Much like the dragons in Adam Rubin’s book, my children love tacos: beef, chicken, big, or little. But if they are also like the dragons in Dragons Love Tacos and don’t like heat, you might want to hold back on the spicy salsa! This funny book is sure to entertain.

Peas and Carrots with Little Pea, by Amy Krouse Rosenthal and Jen Corace
Sweet peas and carrots are a perfect healthy snack for our own little sweet peas. Pair them with this cute story, and you will have a fun way for your kids to eat their veggies while they laugh about how Little Pea hates all kinds of candy, which is what everyone knows all good little peas must eat for dinner!

Spaghetti and Meatballs with Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Judi Barrett and Ron Barrett
My children love this imaginative story about a place where food falls from the sky instead of rain and snow. Capture their imaginations with a plateful of spaghetti and meatballs while they turn the pages and marvel at the types of food that rain down on the little town of Chewandswallow.

A Smorgasbord of Fruit, Cheese, and More with The Very Hungry Caterpillar, by Eric Carle
The very hungry caterpillar is HUNGRY. He eats so much his tummy hurts. Choose any of your child’s favorite snacks to delight them, from fruit to cheese, and they will sample along with the caterpillar. Just be sure to not give them quite as much as the caterpillar has. Or at least not all in one sitting! Also note: A nice green leaf will probably not help things, either.
A Dessert Tray (overflowing with miniature cookies, muffins, donuts, and cupcakes) with If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, If You Give a Moose a Muffin, If You Give a Dog a Donut, or If You Give a Cat a Cupcake, by Laura Numeroff and Felicia Bond
Kids think these books are hilarious, and they are really fun to read together. Pile a dessert tray full of miniature cookies, muffins, donuts and cupcakes for a fun way to taste test each of these desserts that Mouse, Moose, Dog, and Cat like.

Ice Cream (feel free to be generous with the toppings!) with Should I Share My Ice Cream?, by Mo Willems
Perfect for a treat after school or a weekend afternoon, this book just naturally should be read while your kids are enjoying their favorite ice cream (be sure to add sprinkles!). Gerald is trying to decide whether he should share his yummy ice cream with his best friend, Piggie. What’s an elephant to do? Your kids will learn about friendship and sharing in this cute book.
