Are You Ready for Victoria Aveyard’s Next Red Queen Novel, King’s Cage?
Hey, you know how we’ve had nothing to do but obsess over the February release date of Red Queen #3 since Glass Sword came out last winter? Well, it’s time to call the Scarlet Guard, guys, because Victoria Aveyard has finally, finally given us more info on the third book in the series.
It’s called King’s Cage, and holy Mare Barrow, does that title give us the shivers. As if that wasn’t enough, the cover looks like this:
Isn’t it GORGEOUS? And absolutely chilling? This post has been a serious test of my fifth-grade typing skills, because I CANNOT look away.

Because with that darker color scheme and the tagline All will burn, we’ve got a serious case of the shivers. And this title/cover combo definitely does not bode well for Mare. Last time we left her, she was sacrificing herself to be Maven’s prisoner for the sake of the Red Rebellion. Now she’s chained up, being paraded around the Silvers by her ex-fiancé. You know, the guy who has been leaving her notes attached to dead bodies for months? The guy whose mother she killed? Yeah. This book is probably not going to go super great for the little lightning girl.

To be fair, things have never gone so well for Mare. When we first met her in Red Queen, she finally caught a break, only to have it crash and burn in her face when she accidentally discovered she had the superpowers of a silver, despite her red heritage—in front of the entire court. Cue a hasty engagement, political subterfuge, and the ultimate discovery that she was being used as a pawn in a plot to murder the king. Not to mention totally being lied to by her fiancé while also falling in love with his brother.

And then there’s Glass Sword, in which Mare attempts to find the rest of the people like her, only to be constantly foiled by Maven and his creepy, evil mother. And tries to sort out her feelings for Cal, the Silver prince who saved her life (and who all her Red friends kind of hate). All while being used, once again, as a political pawn—but this time by the opposite side. So yeah, being locked in a cage and psychologically tortured by her ex? Not a huge change of pace for Mare.
Meanwhile, what’s going to happen with Cal and Kilorn and the rest of the rebellion? Will the Reds and Silvers ever be able to get over their (literal) blood feud? Will they be able to round up more Reds with Silver powers, like Mare? Is something bigger going on behind the scenes? With Mare’s family still reeling after their loss, some motivations in question, and a tragedy to avert in the Choke, it’s not like the Scarlet Guard has time to focus properly on rescuing Mare.
Not to mention CAL. Will Cal and Mare ever just admit that they’re in love? Is Victoria Aveyard ever going to give anyone a happy ending? Probably not in King’s Cage, at least. But we still can’t wait to read it (even if it breaks our hearts).
