Actual Air : Poems by David Berman

David Berman reinvents the overlooked and seemingly ordinary details of everyday life--from the suitcase of a departing girlfriend to a baseboard electrical outlet. His poems chart a course through his own highly original American dreamscape in language that is fresh, accessible, and remarkably precise. This debut collection has received extraordinary acclaim from readers and reviewers alike and is quickly becoming a cult classic. As Pulitzer Prize-winning poet James Tate said, "These poems are beautiful, strange, intelligent, and funny. . . . It's a book for everyone."

To say David Berman's prose is insightful is truly an understatement. It pokes into scenes of american life and comes back out in places you don't expect. And it's extremely funny, so funny while it peels away truths you always felt but never saw. It's not a perfect volume, per se. He sometimes breaks his tone awkwardly. He sometimes uses a word that seems too powerful for the context of a poem. But even those moments, while not common, are enjoyable to read as Berman seems to stretch himself in new directions. Overall, a fantastic volume of very intelligent, entertaining and refreshing poetry. P.S. -- Berman's part-time band, the Silver Jews, has an excellent recent record titled 'American Water.' It's certainly worth checking out.

This book of poems was the most real I have ever had the pleasure of reading. Berman not only captures the feeling of the moments, but he somehow captures the very taste of them. Highly recommended.

David Berman, in Actual Air shows himself to be at the forefront of a new literary/ musical movement. The movement created by Adam Tetzloff is called 'The new American Honesty.' It throws of the shackles of pretense and gets to the heart of the matter. Berman shines through as a harbinger of truth and hope in his first work, with a voice, wit, and stlye uniquely his. Each poem trancends poetry, becoming instead the disection of moments, of tangibles made intangible. You will laugh, and you will identify, and you will want to write him a letter. Read it, or regret it on your death bed. It's up to you.
