AfterLife by Zoe Dawson

Series Overview

The fine thread between reality and the fantastical has snapped. The mortal and supernatural must learn to co-exist in post-reality Minneapolis/St. Paul where video games leak monsters into the night, demons roam, thirsting for more than just blood, people are not who or what they seem and a diabolical evil plots and plans to devour the world.

AfterLife

In this world gone mad......Lily's biggest challenge is to survive.

Lily Starbuck, kick-ass witch caterer, knows that a day that starts with blood on the horizon is a terrible omen. The day goes downhill from there when a grumpy werewolf refuses to pay his catering bill, her partner cleaned out their bank accounts, and Lily finds her murdered in their kitchen. To make matters worse, the Fairy Dust Administration (FDA) is sniffing around. Fae dust hounds hot on her partner's trail for dealing in illegal dust now turn their attention to her. Their sexy Fae leader takes a particular interest in her and is hard to shake.

Heartbroken, flat broke and with her very livelihood in jeopardy, she discovers that the formidable Otherworlder Security (O.S.) is being tampered with. With no active investigation and a missing body, she has no choice but to discover who killed her partner. Her only backup is a cantankerous gnome who delights in going invisible on her. Clues lead her to an open case being investigated by a tough O.S. warden shapeshifter. It seems a rogue mage has created a video game that is unwarded and game monsters are being released to terrorize the human and supernatural citizens of Minneapolis/St. Paul. Trouble is Lily has reason to believe that this mage killed her partner. Looks like Lily will have to make a deal with a vamp devil and battle wits with the Twin Cities most powerful leader all in the name of justice.

About the Author

Zoe Dawson is the alter ego of multi-published, bestselling author Karen Anders.Karen started her career because her grandmother gave her a book to read. That book made her fall in love with romance and started her on the trek to get published. She achieved that goal in 1996 with the publication of Jennifer’s Outlaw for Silhouette.Even with eighteen books under her belt, she can’t wait for that next idea, that next exquisite sentence and, of course, the next hero and heroine who fall in love.

This story was included in an anthology titled "Paranormally Yours". The characters are wonderful and the story really draws you in. I have been actively looking for the next book in the series which was supposed to be out December 2015. Where the heck is it??? I want to know .... who killed Olivia?

4.5 - "You are full of surprises…" Stars! Zoe Dawson brings us Lily Starbuck’s story in the first book of The Starbuck Chronicles series; Afterlife. She took me on a journey where the map and directions changed numerous times and for really great reasons. I can honestly say I have never read a book quite like Afterlife, it is uniquely brilliant in that the author has merged PNR, romantic suspense, as well as computer game, anime and fictional characters, and bought them all to life in our world. How the author even came up with the concept boggles me, but wowza did it work, and really well too. The tag-line - Reality is broken… anything is possible, sums it up perfectly, because anything could and did happen. I was determined to find out who killed Olivia, and nothing was going to stop me… We are introduced to Lily Starbuck, at a point in her life where everything unbeknownst to her is just about to spiral out of control. Coming home and finding her best friend of three years and business partner Olivia murdered, after discovering she has cleared out their bank accounts and left them with six months’ worth of unpaid debts, puts our intrepid Earth Witch in quite the position. The investigation into her murder doesn’t really bring up any real leads as to why, due to interference from other unknown factors and Lily takes it upon herself to look into things deeper herself to try to find some sort of resolution, and establish just what Olivia had gotten herself involved in, Illegal Fairy-dust for sure, but the reasons why she was so deeply involved... she's not so sure Danger be damned… We are introduced to a whole host of interesting and entertaining secondary characters the further she investigates, and her good friend, the grumbly Gnome; Nock is never far away. And it doesn't take long for her to understand that Olivia's deception goes a lot deeper than originally assumed, and the more layers she uncovers, the thicker the plot gets. I genuinely don’t really know what else to say about this unusual and engrossing story without giving things away, so I am going to leave it to your imagination, the author definitely used hers with this one that’s for sure. "Why did you have to go and get so interesting..?" I am reliably informed that the next book in the series Aftermath is due in December, and I am looking forward to seeing where the author takes Lily, and her new found friends in the next installment of the story.

This book is a complete rip off of the Rachel Morgan series. It's not a bad read it's just so blatantly similar. I just finished the last book in the Rachel Morgan series and if you liked this book, I suggest you try Rachel Morgan's story.

Despite waking up with full blown amnesia three years ago, Lily Starbuck is a contented witch. She has a career in catering with her best friend and business partner, Olivia, and she has Nock, her funny gnome friend, who found her in a field of lilies when she first woke up with amneseia . After catering for a Full Moon party, Lily is annoyed that the werewolf host refuses to pay for her services, telling her to speak with Olivia. Annoyance grows to anger when Lily realises her joint bank accounts with Olivia have been completely emptied. Determined to confront her friend, Lily and Nock go to their apartment to find Olivia's murdered body and pure, illegal dust everywhere. Lily cleans all traces of the dust before she reports the murder to the Otherworlder Security (OS). She thinks her worst problem is when she gets a visit from the Fairy Dust Administration (FDA) but things get stranger from there. Someone is interfering with the OS investigation. They have no record of the crime nor do they have Olivia's body in the morgue. Putting Olivia's betrayal behind her, Lily starts her own investigation to find her friend's killer. This is not an easy task as she has the FDA following her every step and, the very sexy Fae leader, Talon, distracting her (in the best way). I love this book. Zoe Dawson writes an adventure with lots of action, humour and mystery. The heroine is strong and independent, the hero is hot and despite their attraction neither give up on their quests. I look forward to Book 2. **I was given this book in exchange for an honest review**

This book was interesting enough that I read the entire book but was not happy that nothing was solved by the end of the book. I mean nothing. We still don't know why her roommate was murdered, what the key around her neck was for, ect... Too much was left open ended for the next book but really no questions were answered to give you the incentive to read the next book. The writing was done well but I was disappointed with the ending. I don't think I will read the next book in the series.

AfterLife by Zoe Dawson The Starbuck Chronicles Book One Lily Starbuck is a witch with no memories prior to three years ago. She didn’t even know her real name. Found by Nock Whisk, a gnome, in a field of lilies and taken in by Olivia, a sister witch. A nagging question is never far from her mind, “Am I a good witch or a bad witch?” Only she has that answer...lost somewhere in her amnesic mind. The Break, a time thirty years ago when someone opened a portal and broke reality, changing the world as humans knew it. Now every kind of otherworlder exists. This is Lily’s world. When it is shaken up and changed forever, she is determined to find out what happened. Even if it kills her. Zoe Dawson has stepped away from her usual writing in this paranormal that is written from Lily’s point of view. The secondary characters are a mix of personalities that come to life. A handsome fae, an adorable gnome, a tiny dragon along with characters such as Val, who used to be a fictional hero in an anime. It doesn’t end in a cliffhanger...but you know there is more to come. **Sexual content and language
