And, Why Is This Not Cheating? Bringing Honesty Home by Ann Smyth

The title for this book came from a brief incident with a student. Early one morning before school, I noticed a student in my room working on something. When I asked her if she needed any help, she said, “No, I’m just copying something.” I walked over to see what she was doing and saw that she was copying answers to the assignment for my class from a friend’s paper. I told her what she was doing was cheating. Her reply was, “Oh, this isn’t cheating. My friend said it was okay for me to copy her paper.” My response to that was, “And, why is this not cheating?” We had a little discussion about it. I was surprised that she really did not think what she was doing was cheating. In the weeks and months to come I discovered the line between honesty and cheating became very blurry in the minds of many students and the idea of writing this book began.

About the Author

Ann has been dedicated to teaching and education for more than three decades teaching music for 17 years and social studies for 20 years. Today, she has retired from teaching and dedicates her experience to building ethical educational practices in modern students. Ann lives in Salt Lake City with her husband,Russ. She has two children, Elizabeth and Steven.

Ann was born and raised in Salt Lake City, attended public schools and studied education at Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho, Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah and the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, earning her Bachelor and Masters degrees in music and her teaching certificate endorsements in music , history, and geography. Throughout her teaching career, Ann has focused on bringing her commitment to high ethical and educational values to the classroom with high standards and expectations for her students.

While cheating in school is not a new thing, Ann found more and more students who treat cheating with a complacent attitude. Ann learned that many students do not realize how cheating affects their own capabilities, and that by increasing awareness in a non-confrontational, non-accusing dialog had a significant impact on attitudes and cheating habits.
