In this deeply compassionate work, Jean Vanier shares his profoundly humanvision for creating a common good that radically changes our communities, our relationships, and ourselves. He proposes that by opening ourselves to others, those we perceive as weak, different, or inferior, we can achieve true personal and societal freedom.

I read this book after ending a long term relationship and moving 1000 miles away to a new city (community). I was reading the 'Tao Te Ching' in conjunction with this book. At this point in my life, I had a clean slate and a new beginning. I wanted to rediscover myself and become the best person I could be. I was 25 when I read it, and looking back it was the most important book I have ever read. I was looking for strength, integrity, and how to get involved in a new community. Being a musician, I have a chance to convey positive messages to my community and subculture. My favorite lesson from this book was that; if we can't solve small problems within our own communities; what makes us think we can solve big problems throughout the world. This book is not a religious book. The author is forthcoming with his own faith, but very sensitive to those of us who may not be religious. This is a book for all human beings and the world would be a better place if everybody read it. I hope I continue to apply the ideas in this book for the rest of my life.
