About the Author

David H. Barlow, PhD, ABPP, is Professor Emeritus of Psychology and Psychiatry and Founder and Director Emeritus of the Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders at Boston University. Dr. Barlow has published over 650 articles and chapters and over 90 books and clinical manuals, primarily on the nature and treatment of emotional disorders and clinical research methodology. His books and manuals have been translated into more than 20 languages. Dr. Barlow’s numerous awards and citations include psychology’s three highest honors: the Distinguished Scientific Award for the Applications of Psychology from the American Psychological Association, the James McKeen Cattell Fellow Award from the Association for Psychological Science, and the Gold Medal Award for Life Achievement in the Practice of Psychology from the American Psychological Foundation.

Description: This volume discusses many different DSM-5 disorders in terms of history, symptoms, comorbidities, assessment, and treatment. It also presents clinical vignettes that follow a specific treatment protocol (evidence-based practice). This is the sixth edition, last published in 2014.
Purpose: According to the book, the purpose is to present "evidence-based treatments for frequently encountered mental health problems." This is a worthy objective, which the book meets.
Audience: According to the book, "this comprehensive handbook will be read and referred to repeatedly by clinicians and students in clinical psychology, psychiatry, social work, counseling, and psychiatric nursing. It is widely used as a text in graduate-level courses in psychotherapy and evidence-based practice." The author is a credible authority in the subject matter of the book. David H. Barlow is a professor emeritus at Boston University. He has published more than 650 articles and chapters, along with over 90 books on the treatment of psychological disorders and clinical research. Dr. Barlow has won many awards for his lifetime of work in this field. The other contributors represent an international collection of experts in the field affiliated with well-known institutions of higher learning in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Israel, including Aaron Beck, Marsha Linehan, and Jeffrey Young.
Features: Cognitive-behavioral therapies are one of the most effective treatments for panic disorder and agoraphobia, with many patients being panic free within two years. Cognitive processing therapy is effective in treating post-traumatic stress disorder. Clinicians use acceptance-based behavioral models, a behavioral learning theory model for addressing generalized anxiety disorder. Behavioral activation methods are used to treat depression by identifying manageable activities and increasing rewards in the environment, which are obtained in small steps. There is interesting content on borderline personality disorder, which shows a case vignette From Linehan, a leading theorist in the field. Though the patient died within 14 months of entering therapy, it shows how much practitioners can learn from failed cases, as well as the successful ones. Substance use disorder is not easy to treat but a comprehensive assessment is an important first step. The most effective treatments combine behavioral interventions and psychotropic medication. Sleep disturbance has been successfully addressed utilizing CBT-I, a cognitive behavioral approach. The book is easy to read and contains numerous figures/tables, which assist in clarifying the text. There are also case vignettes/transcripts in every chapter to show how therapy is applied to a specific disorder.
Assessment: This book is excellent. Written by well-known experts, it covers many different DSM-5 disorders and problems, providing a step-by-step approach to treatment. The sixth edition justifies replacing the fifth because new research is released daily revealing new evidence-based treatments, as reflected by the updated content in this edition. Clinicians and researchers will not be disappointed by this volume.
