For a light, short (more on that later) Harlequin novel this one was actually really good. I thought the characters and situations were believable. The author definitely kept my interest with the twists and turns of the storyline and, as with all mysteries, I am constantly going through the "whodunit" scenarios in my head. I didn't get it figured out until nearly the end. Now, about that . this story couldn't have ended more abruptly!!! I find it hard to believe that any author would end a novel they had devoted time and energy to in the manner this one ended. I don't need books to end in happily-ever-after mode, but I do need the story to either be wrapped up to a logical end, or be a teaser for a sequel. This was neither! The book ended right at the climax of one of the major storylines of the book and the reader is left hanging about the outcome. I would love to get my hands on a paper copy of this book to find out if the "rest of the story" was left out of the ebook version. My rating would be A LOT higher if I didn't feel a bit cheated.

For a free book it was great reading. Went quickly and was very enjoyable. The story line was great and so were the characters. It kept me glued to my nook reading to find out who did it. I will say that it ended very abruptly. I would have liked a better final chapter for closure for it's charcters and the story. It needed one more chapter to do that. Will read more by this author.

Hudson and Dana fell in love years and years ago. Then, five years ago, he betrayed her. But that all happened before the book begins. The book begins with Hudson coming back to the Canyon in an effort to reunite with his lost love. He ends up caught up in a murder mystery which also conveniently explains his past betrayal. The best thing about this book is the interesting murder mystery plot. The worst thing about this book is the tepid love story. Hudson and Dana's love story is in the past and we never get a chance to see why or what it is that they love about each other. The reader must just assume that they did and that they did so passionately. And that all they need to re-spark that unexplained and undescribed love is understanding - Understanding of the past, understanding of betrayal, understanding of trust. In the end, a much better murder mystery than love story.

A nice mystery & love story.

I have always thought Harlequin books were simple romance novels that had no appeal for me. In spite of my predisposed ideas about Harlequin books, the synopsis for this story seemed interesting, so I thought I would give it a try. Well, so much for predispositions. I really liked this book and persuaded my wife to read it. Later, a friend told me that Harlequin supposedly publishes books other than pure romance novels. I would like to think that is true because I hate admitting that I read a romance novel. Whatever the case, I have to admit I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It was a good story all the way for me. ----- Best wishes, Dave Wile.

Romantic mystery with potential, but many of the characters are not fully developed, and as noted in other reviews, some of the plot lines are abruptly left hanging. Would have liked to see more of the setting explored descriptively - right now reads as a light mystery dropped into the Montana setting. Basic Harlequin romance & mystery is an easy afternoon read but could have been developed further to be a more.

Short but a good read, but again the ending sucked. Either the ebook versions are defective or these authors simply don't believe in proper endings.

The story was well written with a lot of twists and turns to some pretty standard characters. For a love novel it was pretty clean and the characters remained pretty true to the story. I did enjoy the read.

I read it in a couple of hours. I'm not a big romance reader, and I can confidently say that it was purely because of the crime aspect, and it being based in Montana, that it was worth the read. There was no romance in the book at all. For being a Harlequin I expected so much more. I don't mean erotica or full out sex. That isn't my cup of tea. But having characters that actually have chemistry is expected in a Harlequin book. I didn't see the ending coming...the well part, not the lame cookbook part, that was totally going to happen....so that was a nice surprise and the only redeeming quality to the book. The story doesn't flow well at all. It's almost as if the reader kept getting creative brain farts while writing and just added it in there so it would make sense in the end, which it didn't. That annoyed me greatly, and the fact that EVERYONE talked about EVERYTHING in the book, stuff that any police investigation would have under wraps, annoyed me to death.

This is great book my husband sister loan it to me and I now going to purchase more books from B.J. Daniels. She a great writer this book keeps you on edge trying find out what happen next. You will never guess who done it at all I didn't and I love that she made it a good twister mystery.

I liked this book. It had suspense and romance.

The characters, in general, were lacking. I didn't have sympathy for anyone. The "mystery" was actually rather obvious and not well put together.

B. J. Daniels is an excellent author. If you've never read one of her novels, you should give this one a try. This is a full length story/novel, not a short story. A real plus for a free book.

If you read enough of my reviews, you'll know that one of my pet peeves is poor editing. "Crime Scene At Cardwell Ranch" by B.J. Daniels suffered from this...which caused me to suffer while reading it.Five years ago Hud left his small hometown, and his love, behind after he was caught in a compromising situation with his love's sister. Now a mysterious letter and a job offer have hastened his return and Hud intends to get to the bottom of exactly what happened that night. Before he can start his own investigation, he's called out to his ex's ranch where the bones of a body have been found in a well. It doesn't take long for his 'new' case and his own personal case to converge. Pretty much everyone in town seems to be a suspect and his ex is suddenly in the cross-hairs of a killer.Incorrect words (i.e., ...land looked rung out...um, do you mean wrung?), jumps in locations/scenes, blatant clues and an overwhelming number of unlikeable suspects with motives (not to mention unlikeable victims) left me fairly uncaring about the mystery portion of the story. The 'romance' was G-rated and I though BOTH hero and heroine behaved childishly in the past AND present. Do I really need to say that I didn't enjoy this read?
