Crusade (Crusade Series #1) by Nancy Holder, Debbie Viguié

Vampires—the Cursed Ones—have declared war on humanity. Most people are too afraid or unwilling to take a stand, but eighteen-year-old Jenn Leitner trains to become a vampire hunter, risking everything in the process. When Jenn falls for Antonio, a vampire fighting on the side of humanity, she discovers a love that transcends attraction and physical consummation. But the closer Jenn and Antonio become, the greater the danger. Together, they must fight for their love—and to bring light into the darkness the vampires have drawn over the face of the planet.

My daughter recommended this book to me. She kept on me, week after week, asking if I had read it, or if I had even started it, and I would just put it off. I had finished reading the Vampire Academy series and thought that this looked like it would be to similar and wouldn't stand out for me after devouring the VA books. I was wrong (shakes head). This book was great. From the beginning of the first chapter, Crusade grabs your attention. It played with your senses, of needing to hide to live, of needing to be quiet to not be found. Holder and Viguie paint a believable dark time and place. Their attention to detail leaves the reader wanting . . .wanting to know what is going to happen, are Jenn and Antonio ever going to be together, will Jenn ever be safe and who can she trust? Their descriptions of the fight scenes are perfectly done, enveloping you deeper into the world of the Salamanca. The introductions with the other characters in the book were done really well, developed as the book progressed. Another one for fans of the vampire, supernatural genre. You get alittle bit of wolf, a little bit of vamp, and everything else in between. Buffy & Angel enthusiasts will love this book. I mean, hellooooo! A girl who can kick butt - check, a moody, weight of the world on his shoulder attitude vampire - check. Betrayal + romance + action = must read! I was pleasantly surprised.

Jenn Leitner is a vampire hunter, so it seems natural that she would fall for fellow vampire hunter and partner, Antonio. The two teens have been commissioned by Spain's Sacred Heart Academy Against the Cursed Ones, where they are training to join the battle against an evil force that is trying to take over the world. When Jenn is called home from school, however, she must face not only the unexpected presence of the Cursed Ones in San Francisco, her home city, but she is also thrust into the midst of family conflicts that will change her life forever. Betrayal, fear, and doubt vie with each other to undermine Jenn's self-confidence and her relationships with those who should care most for her. Holder and Viguie, authors of the WICKED series and several other titles, add interest to this tale by using a limited omniscient narrator combined with snippets of Jenn's diary to focus the story around the protagonist's struggles. CRUSADE is an interesting and well-developed story that challenges readers to look below the surface to discover what is really important. This is a vampire-licious addition to the paranormal craze for teen readers.

I was so pumped to read this book, and I did get all the way through, but it wasn't easy. There was not enough connection in the book. It was just wasn't as interesting as the summary. It was unique story wise, but just lacking. I really couldn't explain it, but I really wouldn't read it again.

I had a very hard time getting into this book. There are several characters, and it seems like quite a few have secrets or something going on behind the scenes that they don't let the others in on. With that being said, none of them really have anything special that sets them apart. Jenn is the main character. She doesn't have any confidence in who she is, and I'm not quite sure why others referred to her as a leader throughout the book. I didn't feel any chemistry between her and Antonio. There were moments that made me wonder why they were even in a relationship. I'm still wondering that actually, but it seems as if their feelings may be growing. We're given the back story on many of the characters which I found interesting. It let you know what made them who they are now. I kept waiting for that moment where something would grab me or to feel that connection with a character, but I never felt it. Instead, I felt very disassociated from the characters, and without some kind of connection, it's hard for me to become involved in their fictional lives.

A great book Contemporary, Paranormal, Spain, San Francisco and New Orleans Jenn has been studying, living and training for the past two years at Spain’s Sacred Heart Academy Against the Cursed Ones. She is one of the few that have pledged to defend humanity against the vampires or at least die trying. The vampires though are gaining power and the battle has just begun. She is forced to return home after the death of a family member. While in San Francisco Jenn discovers that it is now a stronghold for the vampires. She is a lone hunter apart from her team and because of that isolation she is now at risk. She needs and craves the company of her fighting partner Antonio. She wants his protection, reassurance and his touch. Though a relationship with Antonio has its own risks and the closer they get the more Jenn ultimately has to lose. Now Jenn is facing a betrayal by someone that was once bound to protect her. She now has to face her doubts about everything she has believed to be true. If Jenn is going to survive she needs to trust in herself and her heart. This is the start of a trilogy that while written about vampires proves to be story that is all its own. The plot is fascinating and very different. Reading how the characters interact with each other and how they react to each situation is interesting and pulls the reader into the story. It will also have readers wanting the next book just to see how everything works out or if it is even possible for it to be fixed. It also has several mysteries that while not quite answered in the first book makes for an interesting puzzle to solve. With every answer provided there are still more to be solved and will have readers looking forward to seeing just what drives each and every character in the book. This is one worth checking out.

This is by far one of the worst books I've ever read. The vampire/forbidden love romance thing is one thing. But the bad writing is what put me off.  It changed from first person to third person pretty constantly. I would gauge it at about every three sentences or so. I simply could not continue reading it. I tried up to chapter three, thinking it would get better. I mean, these ladies wrote Wicked, which is really good! Along with Buffy books. This, however, is not good. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone. I'm just glad that I checked it out of the library and I didn't waste money on it.

This book is not really about the romance. Its there but not to the degree you would expect. Its not very well written. Reading it I felt like I skipped the first book. The story launches right into the middle of Antonio and Jenn's relationship. You dont get the falling in love story behind it, which is always a favorite of mine. This book is mostly about fighting and the whole hunter team getting along, which they dont. There are several background romances which just really distract from everything else. Too many background stories (almost every character has a chapter from their point of view, which could have been nice if it focused on the major plot line rather than the background of each character.) Switching between the characters point of view just gets confusing after awhile. Even the ending was kinda like "where in the world did that come from?" I liked the whole idea of evil vampires taking over, people struggling to fight back. It was a thrilling book to read. It created a very descriptive world and it was easy to imagine yourself having to live through it. All in all the book could have been better, but it was decent enough.
