Dante Valentine Series #1-5 by Lilith Saintcrow

Necromancer. Bounty hunter. Killer.

Dante Valentine has been all three in her life. But in the beginning, she was a Necromancer for hire. And while she was choosy about her jobs, there were just some she couldn't turn down. Like when the Devil showed up at the door and offered her a deal. Her life - in exchange for the capture and elimination of a renegade demon. But how do you kill something that can't die?

Dante Valentine, one of urban fantasy's hottest series, is compiled into one volume for the first time. Included in this omnibus edition are: Working for the Devil, Dead Man Rising, The Devil's Right Hand, Saint City Sinners, and To Hell and Back.

I enjoy women that kick butt! However, I could not get past the endless made up words for her made up world, in addition to the adjectives straight from a thesaurus that I constantly had to look up. The tales were great, good plot, good characters, lots of action, but I hated the whiney main character! Lastly, I didn't get a good sense of closure at the end of the series, it was lacking something vital for a Happily Ever After...I kept waiting for Dante to wake up from her stupidity and have a great mind blowing moment of clarity, but no such luck. I will not be reading this author again. I didn't care for her writing style. I had difficulty figuring out who was talking, and what they were talking about because she would go into a lengthy discussion about the person's inner dialogue or setting right in the middle of a discussion and I would have to go back to find the actual spoken words to figure out what the other person was responding about. In addition to the outward dialogue was an endless stream of inner dialogue that was annoying and never progressed very far. Lastly, the descriptions of the setting were distracting from the actual visualizing of it in my head because I was constantly trying to figure out what she was talking about. Using made up words along with the most obtuse adjectives she could find left me wanting to just skip it and get to the point, but often just left me confused.

Books 1 and 2 were awesome. I wish I could have stopped after that. I can understand a heroin being confused about loyalties when dealing with Lucifer and his Demons. But how many times does it have to be proven that Japh is on her side for her to believe it. This heroin whined throughout books 3,4, and 5. I only read the remaining books to see what happened to Japh. I don't think Dante is good enough for Him. She started out as a likeable character and then turned into a whiny complaining little brat. With each book it just got worse and worse and I actually skipped full sections of pages just to get to the end. Don't start reading unless you are one who can walk away from a series.

Read the first book and enjoyed it, so I figured I'd go for the set and read 'em all. BIG MISTAKE. Liked the second book, but by the middle of the third book, I wanted to punch Dante and pretty much felt that way the rest of the series. At first, I felt that the Dante character had such potential for growth and depth as she learned more about her demon powers and the way her life was changing. Instead, she was like a spoiled, petulant and extremely stubborn child. Honestly, by the end of the series, you'd think Japhrimel would choose a life of wasting away without his hadeira over putting up with her whiny, self-absorbed a$$ for eternity. So, while other characters in the series are interesting, the main character is NOT, which, ultimately, makes this series kind of a drag to read. I also like the setting the author has created for this series, which makes me wonder if some of her other books might be worth reading.

I just finished books 1-5 of the Dante Valentine series and I have to say I like Japh's character, but Dante WOW really! She is the lead female of the story, and she is just NOT bright. About every 100 pages or so she betrays the one person who will protect her no matter what - Japh. And so many times she would say to Japh I just want you to talk to me...and then he would start to tell her something and she would tell him to shut up. Really! I continued reading the series because I was hoping for some character development for her. There were glimmers here and there, but no true growth. I am sorry to say that was a miss for me in this book. How rich could the story have been had Dante been developed a bit more so her and Japh could have fought Lucifer as a united front? Aside from the above, I do like the world that was created for Japh and Dante. Some of the other characters had some good depth. And the story did move along well.

I bought the massive complete series after reading the first few chapters at the store, It seemed like an interesting story and it was big enough to keep me occupied for a while, I'm a book addict, lol. Once I got home, however, my opinion changed. I still think it seems like an interesting story, but I'm not crazy about her writing style. I've only read the first book, and had to nearly make myself finish it, there were parts that I really liked, but so many other parts that were so hard to follow, not understanding alot of the made-up words and her not explaining what the hell they were. The main character semed like she could be really awesome, but theres something that I cant really pinpoint about her thats just lacking. And after reading everyone elses reviews, and them saying the first two were the BEST!? I really dont think I can read the rest. I might just cut my losses and take it to a used bookstore to trade in.

I am well read ( just saying ) yet I had to use the lookup feature in my reader more times in this book than the last 100 books I have read ( not exagerating ) anyway got TIRED OF Dantes constant whining....and then the obscure word did not match the context...confusing....I also kept hoping it would stop .....left book for a long time skipped around....finally decided to finish but was difficult

She always writes riveting stories. The character frustrated me, and had to go through trials that are so horrendous it's no wonder the books seem real. I recommend this book bundle.
