Though this is a good book, I've always found it a very slow one. I think this is because it reads more like a legend or a fairy tale than a normal novel. Bilbo moves through his adventure via a series of shorter episodes that deal more with the events portrayed than with the characters. The dwarves, for example, have little to no substance; they're mildly amusing at times - as is Bilbo himself - but I didn't get much of a feel for who they were. There might as well have been one or two of them as thirteen, as Tolkien never really lets the reader get inside their heads. Even with Bilbo, who I like very much in theory, I didn't get a clear feel for the transformation he undergoes. As another reviewer mentioned, I felt as though I was more told than shown what Bilbo went through. This is the sort of storytelling that I value very much in shorter works, like retold legends or fairy tales, but that makes it difficult for me to really get into longer works. The world, however, is extremely well-drawn. Tolkien obviously did a great deal of world-building and knew his space well. It's in the human, (that is, hobbitish and dwarven), element that the story fails, at least as far as I'm concerned. I still enjoy it every time I read it, but it's not a book that could ever mean much to me because it's not a book I can emotionally connect with.

The Hobbit is a masterpice. J.R.R. Tolkine hasbdone it. This book will enthrall you and make you want to keep reading. If you liked this you should read The Lord od the Rings. They are both masterpieces and this reveiw doesn't do the book nearly enough justice. The movie was not as good. The Lord of the Rings movies are better though. This book is a MUST READ! I wish there was room for more stars.
