Noting that most general reference works on philosophy are somewhat light on the Asian side, Leaman (philosophy, U. of Kentucky) decided that a reference was needed that looked at some of the most important thinkers and ideas in Asian philosophy, written by just a few people, and in a format that allowed them to express themselves at some length. Therefore most of the articles, but by no means all, are quite long. The coverage extends as far east as Islam, but not Judaism. Articles include bibliography, and the cross-referencing is extensive.
