In 1930s South Mississippi, Ada, a 38-year-old garden center worker, is alone for the first time in as many years. Her ex-husband, the Reverend Lonnie Boykin, has left her to raise their nine children alone. She meets John, a farmer, and reluctantly falls in love with him. He wants to marry her, but at their wedding, Lonnie tells everyone that she's still married to him and that he faked their divorce.
