Homecoming Weekend: A Novel by Curtis Bunn

If you thought Las Vegas was where “what happens” stays, you have not been to homecoming at a historically black college or university, which means you have missed out. Until now, that is.

Curtis Bunn’s novel, Homecoming Weekend, provides readers a provocative, engrossing and humorous journey to an HBCU campus for those two days of reminiscing, partying, sex, romance, laughs and even tears.

There is nothing quite like homecoming. It is a combination of a massive family reunion and festival, a sentimental and reaffirming annual experience that is laced with rekindled romances from years gone by, weekend flings and surprising revelations. Bunn paints high-definition images of the events as he takes you on the odyssey of five sets of friends back at their alma mater seeking satisfaction in different fashions. And while they arrive anticipating one thing, they end up with realities that place them in moral and ethical dilemmas—and the resolutions are as satisfying as a warm embrace from a dear old friend.

Best of all, Bunn makes you feel like you are right there with the characters— or wish you were there.

Homecoming Weekend gives readers an inside look of what happens when friends, lovers, and enemies reunite for Homecoming Weekend. Get prepared to be glued to your seat when you begin reading this book. I didn't attend a Historic Black College so I was unfamiliar with Homecoming, but reading this book I felt as though I was there with the entire inside scoop. Jimmy & Monica - Married, but they are dealing with the issues of Trust in their marriage. So when jimmy decides to attend Homecoming Weekend alone, this sends off red flags in his wife mind. Will their marriage be able to survive Homecoming Weekend? Tranise & Mary - Both of them are dealing with some unresolved issues when it comes to former loves. Will their issues get resolved during this weekend? Jesse, Don, and Venita - "The 3 Musketeers" - They are dealing with their share of life struggles, so they are looking forward to this weekend as an escape. They soon discover no matter how far you travel, Life isn't something you can run from. Catherine & Earl - tries to see if they can experience fireworks during Homecoming Weekend. Will they be able to discover True Love? Curtis Bunn does an exceptional job of writing an engaging story that has strong characters and tantalizing themes. Every character was dealing with situations I could relate to through experience or experiences of friends/associates. I laughed, I held my breath, and I cried - these characters became my friends. I love when I read a book that makes me excited, and this book definitely did the trick. I highly recommend this book. 5 Stars

As a graduate of an HBCU, I found this book amazing. It was funny. I laughed a whole lot. It was very REAL. No faking anything. The characters were so real and reminded me of me and my friends. I loved it. And here's the best part about it. It's a great book whether you went to an HBCU or not. I give it 5 emphatic stars. Wonderful!!! K. J. London, Howard University

Curtis Bunn’s “Homecoming Weekend” is a fun read about reconnecting with old colleagues for homecoming and finding out what changes have taken place in their lives. Part of the book is about disillusions and readjusting in the face of real life and moving from the theoretical to practical living as participants try to hold on to youthful plights. Kudos to Bunn for writing a ‘shout out’ to past attendants of historically black colleges and writing just a taste of their differences in how they do homecoming versus what may represent homecoming to other colleges. Bunn chose a good and interesting set of characters. There were many characters but the author pulled it off. Through the characters he realistically represented the varying stages of maturity (or lack of) in formulating problems of their reunion, the surprises and the fellowship. As eclectic as these characters were, so much can be gleamed of Tidewater, Virginia, with its Norfolk, Portsmouth, Hampton, Newport News, and Virginia Beach flavor. Bring on the crabs, dance and ‘boom’ at 9:00 p.m.! Not only is it regionalization but a dynamite sub-state culture beautifully captured. I really enjoyed this novel. The author is representing HBCU's, but the book just had too much going on. He could have taken 4 of the characters and really developed their story.

I found the book to be monotonous. Great writing, but the author had a tendancy to get bogged down in details i thought were insignificant. This story couldve been told in about 150 pages.
