Scientists have figured out how to end climate change by stabilizing temperatures around the world. At least, they think they do, until someone flips the switch and destroys the world. August Madison comes back to life in an unfamiliar frozen world. The sun has been mostly blotted out and the cold temperatures are brutal. Those who survived the initial blast, soon freeze to death without shelter in this ruthless new world. August has no idea where her family is, or if they are even still alive, and must depend on strangers to help her survive. Her only hope is a place called Liberty, but it might not be the safe haven she thinks it will be. Grayson Marx leads a biodome settlement in Rhode Island called Liberty. Refugees—the ones who survive the journey—flock there in droves. On the surface, it appears to be a safe settlement, but beneath the surface corruption abounds. Grayson will do anything to save his daughter who suffers from a brain disease. There are those who possess special powers, brought about by the climate change experiment gone wrong, who may hold the key to saving his daughter. Icehaven is a unique twist on the end of the world scenario. Instead of Mother Nature destroying the world in some form, scientists have done it for her this time. I can see this happening in a world gone mad. With vivid imagination, the authors bring this new world into intense focus. You can feel the frigid temperatures and imagine the desolate landscape. The characters are well-drawn and likable—even Grayson Marx who just wants his daughter to survive. The writing flows in that smooth, rhythmic way that I love, and I just couldn’t stop reading Icehaven. I tremendously enjoyed Icehaven and look forward to the next book in the series.
