Lawrence Rothman, the author of In Service to the Nation, is an Army veteran who has used his God-given talent to further his service to his country. By writing a book of poetry and prayers, he reaches out to all branches of the military and the brave men and women who willingly make sacrifices for their country. Their families¿wives, husbands, children, parents, and friends¿suffer throughout the times of separation with anxiety, loneliness, and concern. This occurs whether our country is at war or enjoying a time of comparative peace. The author also mentions Department of Defense civilians and contractors as well as their families. In reality this book is for everyone and stresses how communication with God can help individuals get through any situation. Just as our military personnel need God¿s protection, love, and understanding so do people from all walks of life. Even if readers don¿t usually read poetry, they will be emotionally drawn to the words of the author. The selections are written in free verse, sometimes with open punctuation and other times with closed, but his true feelings are never hemmed in by forced meter or rhyme. The poetry flows naturally and tells the story of this man¿s own personal faith and love for God. There is Scripture and prayer throughout the book that is inspiring and appropriate. As I read the written prayers aloud, they became my personal prayers, and I found myself reading some over and over again. I particularly liked the Prayer of Strength which can be found on page 43 and Friend Defined located on page 48. Some of the poetry brought tears to my eyes all of it made me proud of the military and my country. I would like to quote a few lines from a selection in this book (page 13) that offers praise to our military: How dear you are to the hearts of those around you, wherever you are The determination and dedication you give to everything you do The fearlessness with which you handle the uncertainties you confront in Every day of your life Shining as bright as the stars of heaven above Being an inspiration of love to the very goodness of humanity This book contains additional information and facts that are educational and part of our history as a nation. Although this is a small book, it is very powerful and one that I highly recommend. Buy one for a serviceman, for yourself, and as a gift for someone special.

I beleive this book should be required reading by all of our military personal. In quiet moments when one might feel alone and without any support, you know you have God with you. The thoughts, prayers and feelings it provokes is awesome.

Lawrence Rothman brings his sensitivity, understanding and compassion for those in service during times of war and unrest and has prepared one of the first 'field journals' for spiritual survival for himself and his fellows. A necessary and meaningful endeavor.
