The book really got going for me with the tension between Don Chan, the eminently idealistic political revolutionary recently arrived from the Dominican Republic, and his daughter-in-law and antithesis, Esperanza, the arch materialist. While aging Don Chan lives out the brief twilight of his life in the fading in-and- out memories of his glory days as a political leader and rebel, Esperanza gamely looks for ways of getting the luxe life for which she came to America, having braved the shark invested ocean on a precarious raft. Stuck in the middle are her children, Bobby and Dallas (yes, she named them after her favorite television show, Dallas!), who are left to navigate their adolescence without a father, in a none-too-safe neighborhood. There are some great scenes--like Dallas falling in love with her bestfriend Hush--and Bobby getting caught in the middle of accident with a gun, which lands in in juvenile detention. But the ending is amazing uplifting and reminds you of the profound and myterious undercurrents beneath the surface of life. Definitely worth reading!
